Nice fair and balanced article as always. The vast majority of overpayments that I see are claimants failing to report that they've returned to work. If anything, we need a system where IRS has every SSN of benefits recipients, and they IMMEDIATELY flag SSA the second that they collect income\payroll taxes on the SSN indicating that the person has returned to work. Likewise, IRS should IMMEDIATELY flag all SSNs to SSA that have reported self-employed income.

Likewise, IRS should IMMEDIATELY flag all SSNs to SSA that have reported self-employed income. That’s a great idea, but it’s going to take people to use that information. It’s hard to find and keep employees these days. Everyone knows we’re understaffed, but if no one wants to apply for the positions or stick around once they get them, you’re still going to have a problem processing these things timely.

A full-out 60 minutes segment on this very topic, with Anderson Cooper, aired just last night. Nobody from SSA was willing or allowed to speak to camera and I don't think "we" came off well...
