Also remote, this posting is for AA (OHO equivalent?) with promotion potential to GS13: www.usajobs.gov/job/756110100Would be curious to see how the PDs differ between AA positions within OHO and BVA, and why the positions are graded differently. If only OHO adopted a road to 13 with remote options...

You spent a year in the DMV area and then after a year could go fully remote (also, I thought these positions went to a 14? Could be wrong there.) I'd appreciate any insight into this position others could offer. I've been leery of trying to make the jump for a few reasons. I'm not sure what the current situation is with quotas and how attainable they are.

I'm not sure what the current situation is with quotas and how attainable they are. They did go to a 14. Past tense. I want to say that changed for new hires a year or two ago, but I only know that from following this Board. I’ve been gone for too long to be knowledgeable about day-to-day life at BVA. It didn’t used to be remote at all. I went into the office in DC five days a week, but even dating back to early 2000s, you could telework a couple times a week (but it was a DC-based job). The full-time remote option started in like 2016 or so, but I wouldn’t swear to it, and you did have to do a year in DC area then, too. I think that has changed since the pandemic. In fact, I think they even have remote VLJs now, which they did not when I was there (teleworking ones, yes, but still came into the office a couple times a week). To be fair, it used to be a much smaller agency, but has really grown in size to having something like 900 staff attorneys now. There is no way the HQ on I Street could hold all the staff these days.

Thank you for sharing. I would love a “Plan B” thread for AAs. I need to get out.

Thank you for sharing. I would love a “Plan B” thread for AAs. I need to get out. SSA has some mentoring programs that could help navigate opportunities or team up with a mentor on your own. I have found mentorship helpful.

Also check to be sure that’s the move you want to make. There are older threads on this forum re: the BVA attorney job that discusses those positions and contains links to other discussions.

For those that wish to pursue career paths beyond writing, when opportunities are offered (such as mentoring a new or struggling writer, a detail as a GS, or in the regional office) at least apply for them
First, if chosen, it gives you added experience for your SSA45 when other promotions (to SAA, GS, HOD, or even ALJ) are offered, or if you seek a job with another agency outside of SSA. Second, it shows initiative to expand your experience base to those in a position to offer you a more permanent promotion.
I mean this in the most helpful way, it makes it more difficult for those folks in charge of promotions to promote you if you have never shown any initiative previously. Submitted, by someone who started as a writer, became a GS, and is now an ALJ

Those experiences seemed to be something management considered.
