I, too, would like to know the answer to that. Maybe it's a NYC thing? Pixie Waiting "on" line versus waiting "in" line.

Related issue: Remember that your state income tax liability as a federal employee is based on where you are stationed, not where you live. Choose carefully.

I think the colloquial "waiting on line" has mostly been killed off by the internet. Although, as I say it in my head, if I was telling someone I was going to begin waiting, I'd probably say "I'm getting in line". But, if I can got a call while I was there, I'd describe myself as "waiting on line". And I'm more comfortable with describing myself as having gotten "off" the line than having "out" of the line. Potato, potato. (Does anyone actually pronounce puh-tah-toe?)

Best is to live and be assigned to work in a state with no income tax if you can arrange it. Unless of course you want to avail yourself of the services those taxes provide. Or you have serious concerns about property taxes and other taxes that the no income tax states are imposing to make up the difference. It really depends on what you are looking for.

I am not a New Yorker, but I hear lots of them say "I was standing on line." Nails-on-chalkboard experience! There are too many New Yorkers in my town!

Exactly - if you're going to have infrastructure, you're going to pay taxes. Sales tax and property taxes are what seem to grow in states without income tax

Here in the Cmwlth of PA, we avoid all confusion by taxing it all.

If you have a tiny bit of income in your taxable home state (like interest, dividends), you might not have to file, but if your spouse has income and you file jointly, you will have to file. Best is to live and be assigned to work in a state with no income tax if you can arrange it. So, if you get hired in Reno, NV, do not live in Truckee, CA! Wife’s cousin is from Reno but lives and works about another hour from Truckee. It’s only PRS site but Arkansas solved the neighbors have no income tax issue in Texarkana by exempting residents of the Arkansas city from income tax which they make up for with a higher sales tax. No such break for West Memphis, Arkansas.
