Another recent one was called the “SHOW UP” Act. I am pretty sure it passed the House. The disdain is palpable.

This whole thing is such a load of anti-government and anti-worker crap. It also ignores reality. Many people work in offices that have been downsized such that they can't all fit in the office at the same time.

Have any hearing offices been significantly downsized? I go to my office for in person hearing days and it's a ghost town. If SSA actually does start shrinking it's footprint that would be true telework protection. But, I suspect a lot of urban areas are pushing hard for the federal government (not just OHO) not to dump a bunch office space into a market that already has bloated availability.

I know of at least one office that has substantially downsized their space. I know of at least 1 more that is likely to do so when they renew their lease.

It’s the trickle down effect too. Fewer people in, fewer people parking, going to lunch, having a few pops with co-workers after work, etc. Hate to be a cynic, but like most things in life it is follow the money for the real story. I wonder who owns many of those same said parking lots, restaurants, bars, etc. Things that make you go “hmmn?!”

One of my prior federal employers let their lease up on most of its office space during the pandemic. Their remote telework policy is also their strongest selling point because the job had a high turnover rate and is a bit soul crushing. Forcing their employees into the nonexistent office will probably be a bad decision. But not every agency is the same.

Colleagues: Another conspiracy theory? My federal office space in a leased building was vacated nine years ago, and we were squeezed into a 50% smaller space in a federal building. It was based on telework, job sharing, hoteling, and eliminating private offices. Here's a 2012 article about the program. Gee, I wonder who was president then? www.capitolmarkets.com/space-utilization/gsa-leads-the-way-in-shrinking-office-space/

The question was whether it was GSA or the Agency that made determinations at an office level. I will add that the Republican nominees are making no secret of their views on telework at SSA. You can decide how you feel about it but this video is cued up for the specific section.

The move to reduce federal office footprints is at least 15 years old. More telework means less office space. If TPTB intend to require staff to come in, they must make space for them.
