I'm looking for info on ALJ vacancies in the following cities. Denver Chicago Kansas City Topeka Seattle
Anyone know of ALJs who have retired/quit/transferred-out in these areas?

Hey, Zero!
I had a chat with my local AALJ rep; he knows of no retirements. The transfer list has not been updated yet but may be soon.

The agency must offer to the first person on the transfer list before going to a new hire, so the better question might be, "have 2 ALJs left X office." Another little tidbit I found out recently is that a new ALJ cannot even get onto the transfer list until the 2 years have passed. Some of us had previously thought that a person could get on the list and start waiting for the opening immediately.
Fear not, the more the agencies really head into the paperless realm, the more retirements you will see. Squinting at scribbled medical records (or anything else tiny) on a computer screen all day is hard on the eyes. Learning to work without pen and paper is especially hard for those who did not start using computers until recently.

Anecdotal. I hear that Chicago, Topeka, and KC should provide your best opportunity. Denver and Seattle are tough.

Okeydokey: Awesome information! Why will Chicago and KC will be the best bets? Is there an actual vacancy or has there been little interest in transfers to these locations?
nonamouse: Awesome information! Thank you!

Equally important is the question "Do they have office space?" That sometimes determines which offices receive judges, and how many judges, rather than workload.

Information received via PM. Yes, I do have permission to post.
Here are the numbers of incumbents requesting transfers to the cities you listed, as of the 3/11/08 transfer register. That is the most recent list given to AALJ by the agency, so it is out of date, but FWIW:
Denver 7 Chicago 5 Kansas City, KS 1 Topeka 0 Seattle 3

Chicago is a big place. Do you include the other ODAR(s) in the suburbs, or only the ODAR for central Chicago?
And could you post the transfers for Colorado Springs?

I'm the one who sent zero the private message with the numbers posted above. The numbers I listed are for Chicago itself. Here are the number of transfer requests to other ODARs in the region: Orland Park 2 Oakbrook Terrace 4 Evanston 8 I'm not very familar with Chicagoland, so I'm not sure whether all of those count as "the suburbs" or if there are any other offices that should be included in that category.
Of the 8 who have requested Evanston, 4 are currently in either Chicago or Orland Park, so if they move it could have a ripple effect that might create an opening in their current office.
There are 5 people listed as requesting Colorado Springs.
Caveat: The agency provides the AALJ a copy of the register only a few times a year. The list currently posted is from March, so it won't reflect any recent changes to the list.

There is currently not a hearing office in Topeka. Kansas City is currently full.

How about in Oklahoma?

How about in Oklahoma? March of 08 list has one trying to transfer into Ok City. No mention of Tulsa, but I was told HOCALJ of Macalister OK recently transfered there. Hearsay only on that. No one on list for Macalister; but agency has advertised for hocalj, I know of one judge who applied. No one on list from Oklahoma. AALJ is trying to get updated list from agency. The two year wait is imposed by the agency. AALJ has open proposal to allow ALJ's to get on list immediately.

REONTHELIST -- I too am taking the WD/SI. I noticed you mentioned KC, KS on the list. Interestingly, that was not a choice on the application. I wonder if the powers that be thing that KC, MO and KC, KS are the same place?

I'm not familiar with the area, and all I can go by is what is on the transfer request list as the agency provided it.

The following are the hearing offices in that region taken from ODAR website: CREVE COEUR, MO KANSAS CITY, KS OMAHA, NE SPRINGFIELD, MO ST. LOUIS, MO WEST DES MOINES, IA WICHITA, KS There is no Kansas City, MO, hearing office.

The actual hearing office is in MO about 2 miles from the border. I don't know why ODAR lists it as KS. They may have a mailing address on the Kansas side.

It used to be in KC, Kansas. They moved to the Missouri side of the border a couple of years ago. Good luck to all of you selected to go on. ;D
