Local rumor has it that 3 or 4 new ALJs will be added to the current roster of 16 ALJs. Any truth to the rumor? If so, why so many ALJs in one hearing office?

I have not heard any such rumor. In fact, the number of FTEs for this region was cut drastically earlier this year. Therefore, none of the hearing offices would have sufficient support staff to make such a large increase in the number of ALJs possible any time soon.

I heard it again today. From a very credible source. Office space is being freed up for the purpose.

If the rumor is true, I know one ALJ who is on the transfer list who will jump on it fast. That will take up one opening. BTW, it is not me.

I have now heard a similar rumor. Apparently there is concern that huge growth in the SA service area is on the way.

Interesting that offices would be moved now since the Commish made a public statement 2 weeks ago that our next batch of ALJs would be hired in the summer of 2009. Perhaps they are planning to fill from transfers before the next round of hiring.

Maybe this has already come up, but does anyone know how the Obama administration will handle the staffing issues at the SSA? From what I've read, he understands that there's a huge backlog and seems amenable to increasing the the number of ALJ's.
