Stands for "Measuring the Drapes Question". The expression refers to somebody counting their chickens before they hatch, i.e. measuring to see what kind of drapes you want for an office you haven't yet earned.
At the risk of jinxing myself, I have a mtdq to ask:
Will the agency pay per diem at the training course?

Not only do they pay per diem - but last year we stayed in a Residence Inn which offered kitchen facilities in the rooms, free breakfast and free "snacks" at happy hour (which could often constitute a meal in themselves). Lunch is at the lovely government cafeteria in Woodlawn, so it works out to be quite inexpensive. If you were so inclined, you could get by with spending very little of your per diem during training. Of course, as evidenced by my postings last summer - I made a different choice - and my per diem was spent dining and otherwise socializing with the best class of new ALJs ever.

Hi lurker--looking forward to the details of the Piragon reunion! Me too Southerner. Maybe we should have asked for NOLA rather than PR when we were pleading our case before the COSS.

Under the current rules, you also get to earn and keep frequent stay points if you have such an account with the hotel brand...4 weeks makes a bunch of points.

Some good advice that I received was to pick a chain such as Hilton or Marriott and stick with it for travel dockets. Since the agency put us up for training at a Residence Inn, I was already silver elite status before I arrived back at the office. I like Residence Inn for travel dockets, if possible because it is more like a little apartment with maid service than a hotel room. They will go grocery shopping for you and only charge the actual cost of the items to your room. It is helpful if you would prefer to just heat up something in the room or have something to take for a snack to the hearing site.
