As everybody starts freaking out awaiting their scores, don't forget what a crap shoot this whole process is, and what your scores actually mean. The only people with enough data on the process to make a scientific determination of what really counts are the same people at OPM and ODAR who are running the whole thing. This board has only ESTIMATED that roughly 30% of the people in the process actually get counted by this board in any attempt to statistically solve the ALJ Hiring Mystery. Nobody has ever actually seen a scored application, written test, or structured interview. While we know the ODAR people who held the interviews, I don't think anyone has actually determined who in ODAR does the actual selecting. Even the members of this board who were selected and have been kind enough to continue posting about the process were only able to comment first-hand on some of the characteristics of their own classes, which represented only a fraction of the selected candidates. Similarly, we have some idea of who was hired from ODAR, but little other idea of the rest of the candidates.
In other words, this board is great for giving applicants an idea of what to expect from the actual nuts-and-bolts steps of the hiring process. Otherwise we have little to offer in terms of how your background or score will perform, other than a score of 60 or higher will get you in the game.
This process is the bastard child of two different government agencies and a court decision, which attempts to find ALJs for an extremely narrow area of high-volume, essentially "dead" law, without rules of evidence, and with more in common with a non-adversarial European litigation structure than our own standard adversarial civil/criminal litigation structure. Please remember this when you get your score, find out if you make the certificate, or if you have ultimately been selected. Now excuse me while I refill my xanax.

If you are on a cert then the only thing between you and a Robe is Agency whim.
From here on out the talent portion of the process is largely over. The SSA interview is a lookover for them to decide if you have what they want. Lots of potentially good Judges don't. Can't fake it, can't bake it.
If you get a really high score, then another Agency may hire you, regardless of the SSA "criteria". In 2008, those posters who got hired by other agencies struck me as very heavy hitters...

Everyone who made it through the WD and SI should be getting an OPM score and be on the OPM register. Last year, it was a month later before SSA emailed those who were selected for the SSA certificate. Then came the SSA interviews as well as a thorough background check of six to seven references by Omnisec International "teamed with" Yale Associates . With the number of SSA interviews last year, it took three more months before emails went out to those selected as ALJs. This year, most likely not so long because of fewer SSA interviews and pressure to get training done before the end of the fiscal year.

You'lll be contacted by a federal agency, probably SSA, that will tell you that you are on a certificate. You might be on more than one before you get hired.

pm is correct. Last year one or two other federal agencies requested certificates before SSA made their request.

counselor95 kindly summarized a process that drove alot of the 2007-2008 "class" of posters gaga (many have become Judges and others have issues with the whole hiring process and (in)application of the "rule of 3"--(understandably)). Yet it can be a bit unnerving when your friends and former enemies call and said they spilt the beans to a contract inquisitor.
Nonetheless I have seen little, if any, empirical evidence that this job is not the best in government.
The next part of this gauntlet is "who will stand up and will YOU stand up" portion of the "contest". thingytail hour starts when you get home...good luck all.

I was sent an e-mail advising that my score was on a certificate requested by SSA. Then you fill out more forms regarding references and experience, you interview, and then you wait.
I have no idea if you will be re-interviewed by SSA if you make the cert again this round.

Congrats to everyone who made the register. I'm pleased with my score, will probably make a cert, and will probably be given an offer. Maybe? Maybe not? Anyway, I'm spending my time planning. I listed 35 locations in my geo availability on my application and have now reduced it 12. Researching everything about the 12 cities. I'll be chillin' until the next step.
