Now that scores are out, does anyone have any guesses as to when SSA will request a certificate, how long it will take OPM to produce the certificate, and when individuals will learn that they are on the certificate?

After waiting 11 years for this process to re-open, the way I see it is this. If I am not called for an interview between the end of March and mid-April, I will have to assume that I got nowhere and will reassess my career goals. There is no way that I would go through a second examination after my substantial financial and mental investment in this whole process. Back to the topic, the scores were out much sooner than I actually anticipated. I guess this is good news, and think that interview notices should be out between the last week of March and mid-April. Good luck to everyone!

It's helpful to know your availability when they call. I would suggest syncing your work calendar to your PDA (or printing it) for weekends. Last year they called me on a Sunday to set up my interview. Good luck to all!

I heard that SSA would request a certificate as early as next week. In any event, if you have been interviewed on the current register (NOT certificate) you will not be interviewed again. If you just made the register and are on the certificate you will be interviewed (at SSA's expense). If you are on the register but do not make the certificate (which could simply be because of geographic availability), then good luck in 2010. In any event, Good luck to all!

Last time, once the scores were out, SSA asked OPM for a cert. When it was sent over, I was sent another e-mail advising me it was sent. Sometime after that SSA arranged for the interview. SSA moved very fast. I think from interview to on the job was less than 45 days. I was in the first class. I think there was some flexibility in which class you went to depending on your obligations (shutting down a private practice vice unemployed as I was), but I would be getting ready to move as it will go very quickly.

OPM maintains the register. After you complete all three parts of the process, you receive an NOR and are placed on the register. Agencies such as SSA, HUD, Labor, etc ask OPM for a certificate of eligibles for specific cities to fill vacancies they may have. OPM prepares a list of three candidates from the register and sends the resulting certificate to the agency. The agency hires from the certificate. If you have further questions about this, see the topic "Search Function 101 - read before posting" and follow the instructions. This topic has been exhaustively discussed before.

Well, I have used the search engine, putting in "geographical", "preferences", and "preference" and each time gotten a message that there are no posts on the subjects. There appears to be a contradiction in past posts. Will we receive anything allowing us to modify our geographical preferences before being offered a position? My situation has changed significantly since first applying because of family obligations. I am now more limited in where I can go. I would rather not receive an offer for one of the original places I indicated if it is no longer viable for me. Thanks and sorry if this has been discussed before. I could not find it.

You will be able to reduce the locations you previously selected before offers are made. You CANNOT add any locations. Please consider your selections carefully and ONLY include the cities you want. Good luck to all!

I know that it is aggravating to some of us that people ask questions that were in the posts back the last time this whole thing went down-but I really think that if you make the process too intimidating people just won't post. And while it is wonderful to hear from "Forum Elders" and the like-it is new people who are the life of the board. Besides almost everything that is asked has been addressed in one way or another before. Right now the topics on the board are fairly narrow- "How likely is it that I will get to be an ALJ" and "When will I hear something new?" Frankly I am tired of seeing everyone apologize for having the nerve to ask a question that in the hundreds of past posts may have already been answered.

With one exception, most of the forum elders have been very encouraging to new people and taken the, "there are no stupid questions" approach. Ditto that new members must be made comfortable or this board will die out. As for the one person who hates seeing people ask questions that have already been answered: sublimate your feelings.

Hurray and thank you. Earlier, I was going to post my feelings about how some old timers are making us newbies too nervous to post anything that may possible have been discussed before - but I was too nervous!
Thank you, Zero and hod, for addressing this. You are dead on that some of us were feeling too nervous to post based on critisisms of repetitious posts.

. . . . And remember some of the newbies here will soon be colleagues. And those of us who are now ALJ's look forward to the help! Speaking only for myself, I continue to participate on the board because I remember what it was like for me just last year. So hang in there - - for many of you the best is yet to come...
