Here's the information I've found through my research so far, and some questions for those who are knowledgabe about Region X.
Info:
Region X includes Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. ODAR has offices in Seattle and Spokane, Washington; and Portland and Eugene Oregon. Seattle is the main office for the region.
There's an audit report to Congress focusing on ALJ productivity that has a lot of other interesting information. It's here: www.scribd.com/doc/9618124/OIG-Administrative-Law-Judge-and-Hearing-Office-Performance. Appendix F to the report shows that Region X got only 2 new ALJs the last go-around; one in Seattle and one in Spokane. (It's unclear how many ALJs transferred to Region X from elsewhere).
The report also gives an inkling about how numbers-driven the offices might be. Per the report, the National average of dispositions per ALJ in 2007 was 474. In 2007, the average dispositions per ALJ in Seattle was 436; in Spokane it was 536; in Portland it was 379; in Eugene it was 513.
Per the report, the National average of pending cases per ALJ was 702. In Seattle, this was 649; in Spokane 776; in Portland 820; Eugene 508.
Questions:
1) Which offices currently are expected to have openings for ALJs? (I know this answer might change based on the current round of transfers).
2) Which offices have good morale; good ALJ to staff ratios; good management? (Per Wild Wild West Seattle got the highest marks for this and Eugene the lowest, but it would be interesting to know more).
If you have similar questions about other regions, I suggest you might want to start a new thread, as I'd like this thread to focus on Region X discussion.
