1. Is anyone aware of any plans to conduct another cert to hire for some of the cities excluded from this round of hiring?
2. Is anyone aware of any vacancies in any of these excluded cities?
3. Does anyone know the number of people on the cert this time around? I've seen estimates before but now that the cert is out, I’m wondering whether there are some more reliable figures?
4. Are there any geographically challenged people from the last cert that are willing to share stories of their experiences? Did you get picked up on a later cert or another agency or did you wander in the wilderness forever?

Don't have the answers to your questions. I was geographically challenged last year, but didn't know it (it wasn't a recognized condition then)! When I was able to, I changed my number of locations from 10 to 137. Of that, 80 are on this list. I'm hopeful this time despite my score of 65, BTW, one of my original locations has not been on any of the certs (Voorhees, NJ) Good luck to all.

I was in the geographically challenged group.
The word on the street was that there would NEVER be a hire off of the cert because: 1) there was only one SSA hearing office in the metro area; 2) the ALJ's were happy in the office (and not likely to transfer out); and 3) the ALJ's were young.
But, three ALJ's left. And, due to the economy, no-one wanted to transfer in. So, I am on the cert and there may be two or three hires (it is not clear).

I think the bad economy may be a boon to the geographically challenged. Who wants to move at their own expense when houses aren't selling?

"Who wants to move at their own expense ..."
Own expense?? Are you sure that's the case?

My understanding is that outsiders coming into the agency move at their own expense. There are a few older threads on this board chocked full of information regarding the relocation process.

Chieftan, I think the "move at your own expense" referred to ALJs on the transfer list.
I am about 99.99% certain that transfers move at their own expense (not to be confused with those promoted to HOCALJ/RCALJ, who do receive moving expenses).
I have no comment on newly appointed ALJs.

I think I have basically hamstrung myself right out of competition. My 3 year old has a physical disability and I am not willing to move away from her. I provide a LOT of care for her and I suppose my loyalties are with her first. I have limited myself to Oklahoma only, that's Tulsa, McAlester and OKC. Her condition has gotten a little worse since I started this process and I'm basically now going to limit myself to OKC. Which will probably put me completely out of the running. Oh well . . . I just can't leave her. I think for me, there probably is no hope.

This may make you feel better or worse - I knew an ALJ who wanted to go to only 1 city and finally got in after sitting on the register for 10 years. Hang in there - your day may come sooner or later.
P.S. Family is far more important than this job will ever be!

Chieftan,
People coming into the agency from the outside must pay their own moving expenses.

Okeydokey is correct. Moves of rank and file ALJs under the reassignment provisions of the AALJ contract are at the expense of the judge concerned: Article 20 I. 1.B.: B. Because Judge reassignments made under this provision are at the request of the Judge and are primarily for the benefit of the Judge, all expenses related to any requested relocation will be paid by the Judge.

If you are not a current federal employee, then you will have to pay your own moving expenses.
This should not be a surprise to anyone. The agency has never paid moving expenses for a new ALJ unless that person was already an federal employee.
Indeed, I know they hired a few ALJ's from medicare a couple of years ago and told them they would not be hired unless they agreed not to request moving expenses.

It can depend to a large degree on the way you are geographically challenged. If you have restricted yourself to an area of the country where no large scale hiring will take place (Region I comes to mind- only a handful judges were hired for region I offices last year and not until the 4th class) then yes limiting yourself geographically probably means you will be waiting a long time.
On the other hand, if you have limited yourself to an area or city where there will be a fair amount of hiring, then you may be OK. I limited myself to only one city and was selected last year. A couple of the other judges assigned to my office also had limited themselves to only one city. Without getting into another full blown discussion about the selection process, my opinion is that people with a limited geographic area have a much better chance of being selected when large numbers are being hired overall and the one place they can go is on the list.

That is very interesting--I have never thought of it that way. It does beat being sent to somewhere you don't want to go and being miserable.
Good luck to all--I don't have a dog in this fight
