Does anyone know if SSA pays for a hotel overnight for the interview or do they just book flights in and out on the same day as the interview ?
Thank you.

They will pay for flight and one night in hotel plus per diem. You will be asked to get a gov't credit card to use for expenses. SSA employees will be granted administrative leave up to 16 hours.

If driving, do you get mileage?

Ifdriving, do you get mileage? Yes, the government will pay your expenses whether flying or driving. If it cost less to fly, that is what you will get, rather than mileage reimbursement.

How does that work? Do you get a reimbursement after paying the bills and showing receipts?

You'll receive a packet with claim forms to fill out . Last year, the packet was handed out while you were waiting for the interview. Remember to save all your receipts. SSA wanted the form returned within 5 days of your interview. I drove to Falls Church & stayed overnight the night before the interview. The Agency paid for my hotel, 2 meals, mileage, tolls & parking.

I believe that it will depend on the time of your interview and where you're coming from. If they can fly you in and out on the same day, they will not pay for the hotel. I believe I flew down a day early just to avoid the stress of traveling that morning and paid for my own lodging. The people at SATO will be able to tell you for sure.

Federal travel regs require recipts for anything over $75.00. But with this trip I would err on the side of caution. SSA employees are given duty time to go to the interview, not administrative leave. Be careful filling out the forms--nothing causes more trouble than mis-spending government money.

Jeseymon, thank you for your reply.
Another question, is there a walking distance hotel to the interview site?

I ended up having to spend an extra night in Chicago because of a blizzard nobody anticipated and they did not have any problem reimbursing me for the extra expense. Also, I took a cab from my hotel which was right by the pentagon city shopping center and it took less than ten minutes to get to the SSA offices, so you're pretty close no matter where you stay (within reason).

There is a Homewood Suites and a Hampton Inn (Hilton hotels) right across the street from Skyline. The Hilton Mark on Seminary Road is also close. Make sure the Homewood is on Leesburg Pike--there is another close by but getting to Skyline is a hassle in traffic from there.
Good Luck--glad I don't have a dog in this fight!! ;D
