I just applied for the first time to the ALJ posting in November 2009. Has anyone heard anything about the applications, or know how long it will take to hear results from the application.

Hi--I am new here also but I have been reading along for a while. I also applied in November. As far as I know, the results are now overdue compared to the length of time it took to get results in the past. However, as someone pointed out a few weeks ago, a lot of federal employees were out of the office during the last 2 weeks of the year, so it is tough to even count those 2 weeks as part of the time we were waiting.
I am very curious to see if anyone else can weigh in on when they think we will have results. I think it will be a matter of days.

No, Agnes, they're not overdue. I applied in May of 2007, I think that it was May 7, and I got my Notice of Results on July 11. So that was about nine weeks. This time we applied on November 9th or 10th, so nine weeks would be about next Tuesday, January 12.

When you applied there were some holidays in between but it was not the "use or lose" time of year for the federal employees. I would expect it to be slightly slower now but maybe not b/c there are such big goals for Fiscal Year 2010. My new guess is Thursday the 14th.

I would add some time to this computation. There was alot of use or lose leave used at the end of the year plus you had the holidays. Rest assured that the NORs will go out, albeit a bit later than you predict (but then I don't know anything--just guessing).
This Board is really good at alerting folks.

Not to nit pick but in the 2007 exam the NOR came out in October or November. What we got in July was the invite to the WD and SI so we could wait some more. I expect that we will hear about the WD and SI soon. (But I work for the government so soon could be tomorrow or a few months from now.) Folks, don't get worked up over every step, it will happen when it happens. Getting nervous and concerned won't speed the process but it will make life less enjoyable during the process. Relax, check your e-mail regularly and monitor this board. It will probably be posted here before you see the e-mail notice. Don't make becomming an ALJ to focus of your life -- there is a bunch more important than being an ALJ. The process is not fun but life should be.

No, Chinook, what I got was the NOR. I believe that the exact wording was - You are so stupid that when we asked for the state or states in which you are licensed, your license numbers, and the dates on which you were first licensed, and you gave us the state, and your license number, but not the date, we realized that you are a complete idiot. Therefore, this is your Notice of Results. You can appeal, you can stand on your head and whistle "Hail to the Chief", we don't care. We have made up our collective minds about you and the other imbeciles who failed to fill in the dates on which they were first licensed. It was something like that.

Just lovely! I just looked over my copy of the application - I also left off the date of bar admission. I feel like an idiot. I stayed up all night doing the AR b/c I couldn't take off work either the day it was posted or the following day when it closed. I will appeal, but based upon previous experiences of other posters, such as the below, I am out of the game this round. Good luck to the rest of you and "Remember we are all in this together." - The Red Green Show.

I wanted to say Hi- I too have been lurking for a while. A friend recommended the board to me, she went through the last hiring round and was an active participant, but is no longer on the board. Anyway- she was right, there is a lot of helpful information on here and I appreciate all that you guys post, even if I have nothing to add. Just waiting and seeing, and trying not to freak every time I read something and wonder "did I put my date of admission somewhere on the application!" I'll reserve all my craziness for when people start getting invited to the WD.

They really do want the full date of admission as on your wall certificate, not just year. It's easy to overlook because you almost never give the exact date. However, if you get a notice that you are ineligible because of some small oversight, appeal anyway and immediately by email. In '07, I left out the exact dates of my admissions and appealed and was allowed to test, but, caveat - I got notice that they reconsidered me and that I was eligible the day before I was to be in DC for the test, and it was at the end of the testing time - so I had no time to prepare or postpone. I found out on Wednesday I had to be there on Thursday, and back the following Tuesday as well. I went for it and made it onto the register where I now reside. Almost a true success story. Unfortunately, my actual goal was to be appointed as an ALJ, not just get on the register. Those genies are very technical when you make wishes, however, so asking to make the register isn't quite enough.

You know I realize that this is of little comfort, but others have made your mistake. I think its important you don't run yourself down, even in jest, because this process (a gauntlet really) will run you down enough. You have to really BELIEVE that you will get the Job when the Universe (God) is ready for you. Positive thought and/or prayer really helps, IMO. Many of the Judges I have met forgot about the Job after putting all the positive energy on it that they could. Many languished on the old pre-2007 Register for years and years... Because SSA is the big hirer and because of the way they three-strike and hopscotch their way around the certs, the selection process can be very arbitrary and unfair. This Board has many posters past and present who have been picked and not picked based upon the fickle finger of Fate. That is not to de-emphasize the importance of being an insider or outsider with solid SSA experience who is known to be a team player and comes across as one in the all important SSA interview. Positive thinking without being arrogant will help you in the process and to get through this gauntlet.

I have to agree wholeheartedly with privateatty. The first time the app opened, I was denied because I failed to put my bar number on the app. The second time the app opened, I was out of the country. Third time a charm? Who knows. However, I do feel I'm better prepared, and would make a better ALJ now. So maybe it was supposed to be this way. Either way, I'm not losing sleep over it. I'll do my best, and then let the chips fall where they may.

Did anyone else just include the year and not the month and day you were admitted to a state bar? If so, were you found inelegible? Did you appeal?

I applied in May 2007. I put only the state and the exact date of admission. I failed to put my bar numbers. I actually thought NY didn't have any because I didn't receive a card with my number on it like I did in PA. So I appealed my technical denial by stating that if my PA admission info was not enough, certainly my NY info was. Shortly after I sent the email, I looked at my NY bar stuff and found the number. That was in July 2007. The last week of September 2007, I received an email stating that I had been scheduled for the SI and WD the next coming week much to my surprise. I took both parts of the exam back to back days the last weekof September or first week of October 2007. I have no idea how it happened, especially given that I gave bogus info on the NY bar number because I assumed we didn't have them. I know this doesn't explain anything but it's what happened. I made the first cert and interviewed in January 2008 but alas was not picked. I reapplied this November 2009.

A cautionary tale to those who expect a linear, bar application and bar-exam like experience.

Jib:
Fraid so - look at your wall certificates, they have the dates on them - at least my two states do.
CB:
I had an almost identical experience, except with my dates of admission. The other thing that is sometimes weird is that if your state does not have a mandatory bar membership, the number is not really a "bar" number but a supreme court number or some such thing.
It's always something.
