Does the SSA contractor call references AND current and previous employers for everyone regardless of whether they intend to make an offer? I thought we could not list current and prior supervisors as references, so I didn't, but today they called my current supervisor. This means nothing, right? You would not list a current supervisor as a judicial, adversary, or personal/professional reference, but on your job history on the form you faxed SSA, you had to name a supervisor/rater for each job, and if you checked "yes", on the question about whether your current supervisor could be contacted, why wouldn't they do so?

Sorry but I don't think calling your supervisor has any significance. My supervisor and fellow applicants' supervisors have been called in the past and we are not aljs. Calling references and supervisors when you don't have a chance in hell can be humiliating.

Great. I'm going camping the week of July 19 - no internet, doubtful cell phone service - ugh! As for beverages not to appear too low brow, but, as Homer Simpson said, "Mmmmm, beer." I think it is appropriate to notify the ALJ Hiring guy (Bob G.?) about this kind of thing so that IF anything is coming for you, they know why they can't reach you and will give extra time.

RCALJs and HOCALJs are now being contacted for references for current ODAR employees that are on the cert. I think they are still on track to make decisions around the 15th and the offers a week to 10 days later. Checking references is what you do before you hire someone. It is possible they will run the background check after the offers. The mere checking references does not up your chances unless of course you get a very good reference as opposed to a bad one.

Two of my references were contacted this morning. Hallelujah!

I have been contacted as a reference for a few candidates and the most recent call was this morning so just know that the background checks are still proceeding this week. No need for anyone to be concerned.

I have been on certs before, and my references have been contacted before, but I did not get the job. But this time something seems different - they contacted ALL the references I listed on the latest Personal History Form, and some from a prior Personal History Form. A very thorough investigation (unlike last time when they contacted some references, but not all). Very strange!

Someone from the West coast: are we the last to be reference-checked because we are in the last District for hires?

Someone from the West coast: are we the last to be reference-checked because we are in the last District for hires? I don't think they bothered to sort them in that way. And, what do you mean by "last district"? Just numerical order? We don't know the GALs of those who have not had references contacted, assuming that matters. I think it's not worth the time to try to figure out if there is ANY meaningful order to the contractor's process, and if so, what it is.

If I have calculated correctly.
I think start date for first class would be August 30, 2010. That is the first Monday of a new pay period for the ALJ's. That would give the newbies a full two weeks at the new duty station (Aug 30 to Sept 10 minus a holiday) before reporting for training on September 13 which would conclude on October 8.
Second class would report to duty stations on September 27, also the first Monday of a pay period. Be on station Sept 27 to October 8. Report for training on October 12 (the 11th is the infamous Columbus Day Holiday that has factored in all the talk of training. Training would run to November 5.
I think unless the rumor earlier in this thread of a January training were to come about the second class has to be the October class. The October class with Columbus Day delay has been a consistent feature of all talk of this hire. If that is correct October has to be the second class or the second class has to wait until January. A post October class would start no earlier November 8 and would overlap Veteran's Day and Thanksgiving day. Finding anyone willing to train over Thanksgiving Day would be a nightmare. December is when most senior employees disappear for use or lose.
A January class is interrupted by a holiday unless it starts January 24 and concludes February 18. Move forward or backward and you either hit ML King Birthday or Washington's Birthday.

I think I'm the one who posted the "january" rumor and may be the only one who has heard it. I think, honestly, that the person who told me that got "new fiscal year" and "new year" mixed up.

Take it for what's it worth, but the Region 3 ODAR Outlook newsletter came out today and it still lists New ALJ Training on schedule for September 13-October 8 and October 12-November 5.
So, at least that hasn't changed.

Interesting, given the recent info that most of the new judges won't start until at least October 1, in the new fiscal year.
Sometimes newsletters are just wrong in that they copy old info from previous issues and don't get changed.

The latest ALJ class was told in training that the next training classes would be in September and October, consistent with the above.

Interesting, given the recent info that most of the new judges won't start until at least October 1, in the new fiscal year. Sometimes newsletters are just wrong in that they copy old info from previous issues and don't get changed. And sometimes newsletters are right and the original plan sticks (especially when travel and/or meetingss and training sessions have been scheduled for months.) I still haven't seen anything reliable dissuading me from the belief that August 30 and September 27 start dates are on, followed by two weeks at the new location, and then followed by the 3 week training (starting on Sept 13th and Oct 12, respectively). For that matter, I see nothing indicating "they" won't be deciding today and tomorrow (and Saturday or Monday, if necessary) and calling with offers next week. Be ready.

True. So far as I know, they finished my reference checks yesterday, although they may not have been able to actually reach them all. TNot sure what others who were getting their calls done this week have heard.
They may very well use part of the weekend and not take the whole week next week to make the decisions.
Be ready is good advice. Good luck, all!

I was interviewed as a reference and was told that the contractor had to complete its report(s) by Monday. Not totally inconsistent with calls going out next week, but probably not until the latter part of the week at best.

FWIW, one of my references was told today that they (the contractor) "close it out tomorrow." The next week or two will probably be tough. Remember: - About 2 out of 3 of us won't make it (this time at least)
- It is no reflection on us professionally or personally
- While I certainly can't speak for everyone, in the grand scheme our current lives, should we be "forced" to continue them, probably aren't so bad.
I'm going to ration my board time in a no-doubt vain attempt to keep things in perspective. Good Luck, and God bless.
