I suggest that everyone take a deep breath. As I indicated in an earlier posting, my offer came about a week after the most of the other new ALJs who started on 7/17/2012. I also suggest that if you really want the job go where ever the offer is and put your name on the transfer list to the office or offices that you want as soon as you can. If you join the AALJ, you will have access to the transfer list. That is one of the primary reasons I joined. I was able to put my name on the list for three of the four offices in my home area that had no one on the transfer list and I was offered a transfer to one of them a month after my name went on the list.
By the way, in my class of 48 new ALJs, as far as I know at least 16 have transfered home or close enough to home to commute, or somewhere that they wanted to go. However, many offices in Califorania and Florida have several names already on the transfer list and, unless you are willing to go to an NHC, Baltimore and DC are hard to get to.

I am in Fresno, CA. No Call. Fresno has two ALJs up for transfers. Can anyone give me any insight or reason for hope that I might get a call for Fresno?

Offer calls are not completed. Really.
But have a good weekend, relax, and congratulate yourself for getting as far into this process as you have. No matter what else happens, you must be a good lawyer and a solid person to be where you are. I hope I get to meet you.

Before I became an ALJ, I had a very limited GAL and was on several certs where they did not fill any offices on my cert. If they would send an email to these people and tell them, sorry you are no longer under consideration because the office(s) are not being filled, it would be less cruel than the current practice. My office is on the cert and there are no empty ALJ offices. They only hire when there is an empty office. In addition, there is someone on the transfer list for my office. I know of many offices on the cert with no open ALJ offices. I don't understand why they put them on the cert and put applicants through all of the trouble and stress when there is no possibility of an offer.

allrise, I think they do that for two reasons: (1) certain offices may not currently have an opening, but someone from that office could be on a transfer list to one or more locations; and (2) by telling OPM that they "anticipate" hiring 120 positions, when they actually intend to hire far less, they receive many more names than they should, thus giving them a far greater pool of applicants than they are otherwise entitled to take on a cert. at one time.

Allrise, any chance you could list the offices you have information about? It may lessen anxiety for some.

While I can understand why it feels unfair to applicants to have many cities on the cert that don't actually have openings, as you can tell this is an extremely time consuming process for the agency where they realistically can only make hiring offers 1-2 times per year. With such a statutorily required cumbersome process, they have to include as many offices as possible to ensure when they do get to "pull the trigger" they can fill every possible vacancy. if they left off certain locations and then an office suddenly opened up that they could not fill, it would be potentially 6-12 more months before they could. Honestly, I'm surprised the agency just doesn't issue a cert with every single office on it every time.

Region V is one of the biggest regions (I think Region IV (Atlanta) is the only bigger region) and it has several offices with high turnover (Valporaiso (sp?) and Toledo in particular), which helps explain the higher number of openings and hires.
As for the person who wondered about a Hawaii office, there is one office with one judge and lots of people on the transfer list, so do not expect to see an opening in your lifetime

26 members of this site have accepted offers according to the poll page. Luckily I have lots of files to prepare to take my mind off the wait.

One city in Region 9 had two openings when the current cert came out, but both openings were filled by transfers at the end of February. Thus, no hiring because no empty ALJ offices. Two ALJ's want to transfer out, but until they are physically gone, the agency does not consider it an opening. Congratulations to all who received offers!!

BTW, the current HOCALJ in Honolulu, Hawaii only went there about 2-3 years ago, as a transfer from West Los Angeles. In all likelihood, he will be there for about 15-20 more years, so I agree w/ Shadowyfigure that it's useless to expect an opening there in our professional lifetime...
