I've had four HOCALJ experiences in two regions. I believe the most important factor is the HOCALJ, followed by the region. You either have a good HOCALJ, or you don't. Not only did Bartleby have a terrible experience with management in R5, but my experience is that so many ALJs want to leave R5, that the whole management team (HOCALJs and R5/Chicago regional employees) is narcissistic. And, of course, paranoid about the constant departure of ALJs and others out of the region. Just sayin. If given the opportunity, I will gladly accept a R5 position and deal with the narcissism. I would probably become narcissistic myself just to fit in. (LOL!) Did you say paranoia? I am not paranoid, but why are people always out to get me? (Just kidding!) I think some people have a hard time fitting in to certain situations because of their perceptions of life. Some people are more adept at deflecting issues than others. Some try to deal with conflicts or issues head on getting in trouble and some people just bury their head in the sand waiting for the conflict or issues to disappear. You have to have a Teflon-like ability to adjust to the challenges put in front of you.

When I was waiting to be an ALJ, I was willing to go almost anywhere. I would be, and was, open to R4 and R5. That's how I know about R5. However, Funkyodar bought up the discussion, and I added my 2 cents. Peace.

When I was waiting to be an ALJ, I was willing to go almost anywhere. I would be, and was, open to R4 and R5. That's how I know about R5. However, Funkyodar bought up the discussion, and I added my 2 cents. Peace. Glad you did Costco. I know everyone's experience will differ and in teh grand scheme the individual office managment matter more than regional managment....but with that said the ALJs that I talk to regularly all mention the growing micromanagment out of regional offices and the constant barrage of "why hasnt this case been moved" emails that originate in regional managment as their primary saddle bur of late. As someone who has given a wide open GAL, and only having experience in one region, i thought forewarned is forearmed. Its interesting to me to hear about region 5. The complaints and caveats offered here about 5 are dead on from what I hear from my ALJ friend about 4. While I would gladly take a job in either, it is certainly making me think a different region would be preferable. Of course, my preference matters to OPM about as much as my thoughts on the syrian civil war, but when I give the ole 4 leaf clover a rub and send my prayers up I now include thoughts on getting a job in a region not known for being among the least alj friendly.
