I know you are new having joined the board yesterday, can you elaborate on your status? Are you currently testing for the Federal ALJ or are you interested in becoming a state ALJ? Are you a licensed attorney?

I'm not sure if this is addressed to me but I'll answer it anyway.
I'm a licensed attorney.
I've been lurking on this board awhile but just joined it.
I took the WD/LBMT 9/4 and the SI 9/5. Currently anxiously awaiting OPM's sending out the results after they finish the testing and the scoring.

Are you a licensed attorney? Hi! I am a licensed JD interested in ALJ on both the federal and state level. Any advice in the state level since I missed federal? You? Your story?

You are a newbie on the board so I will do my best to fill you in and attempt to help you: This board is mainly, if not exclusively, for those seeking to secure a position as a federal ALJ. As you indicate you missed the opportunity to apply during the application period earlier this year. If you are interested in becoming an State ALJ this is not the board as another member pointed out to you. I did note that another member of the board who is a state ALJ offered to provide you information via PM.
I have found the members of this board to be immensely helpful as evidenced by how they have answered your questions. But I notice that you are asking questions that have been beaten to death or you are digging up old threads seeking additional information with “can anybody else add to this?”---if you have questions then ask the question. Again, please ask questions that relate to the Federal ALJ position. Read the entire thread before asking the question. For example if you read the thread about last minute records or if you use the search function you would learn that SSA ALJs cannot sanction reps. It is a topic that has been previously discussed extensively. If you do not know what the duties of a federal ALJ are then you need to learn about the job before coming to an ALJ board to find out about the Federal ALJ position.
There is a search function on this board which allows you to search for information you are interested in before asking questions. In addition, I suggest you read the post with stickys on the top of the first page and you will get a bunch of information about the Federal ALJ position.
My experience in the past six months on this board is that it is civil board. In other words, show some civility when you post and ask questions. You do not walk into a room and go up to folks you do not know and say “hey you, what is your story?” Even a Yankee like me knows better. If you wish to learn more about a member do like the rest of us--click on their names and read their prior posts.

We really have to see about getting a "like" button. Ditto! Ask and thou may eventually receive. Look at the upper right hand corner of the posts... now you can rate posts via the "Critique" button on upper right hand corner. Unfortunately, it doesn't show up on the "Recently Updated Post" view. You have to be logged into your account and in the actual thread itself to see the new function. It is not perfect by a long shot but it was the best I could find out of a limited selection in the Plug-In library.

I have been lurking for many months and all I can say is that you are 100 percent right on your comments, but you lose quite a few points for style. But you did say that you were a Yankee and that could explain some of the style in which you schooled aljustice, but we are all in this together and should be just a little bit easier in the comments. I'm a 10 pointer/war vet and an ex First Sergeant in the Army and I thought that was a little rough. I respectfully disagree. I think exjag posted a well thought (and much needed) response to our new poster. I think he displayed an essential characteristic of an ALJ--the ability to disseminate potentially unpleasant news in a non-biased but direct way. No he did not sugar coat it--but everyone here is an attorney (or should be) and we ALL know how to research, at least basic research. Our new poster was likely not aware that hundreds of folks follow this board routinely, and especially now while there is an ongoing process afoot, most read every new post that comes out (I do). With that said, there is a balance...we don't want to see numerous old posts that have been beaten to death dredged up with comments like "can you add to this" without any specific question. A very simple google search or even searching this board would yield a result. I think exjag made a valid point--how else do you deliver unpleasant news? He got to the bottom line--didn't call names, but it needed to be done. Now with that said, no one should be deterred from asking questions but a flurry of the same broad questions on all these old posts without at least attempting to find the answer...it was getting to be a bit much. I suppose exjag could have smoothed it over and been "gentle" but I think sometimes a direct to the point approach is needed, even if it comes across as harsh to some.

I found no issues with exjag's post. If someone's skin is that thin, I have no idea how they manage to survive in the "dog eat dog" world of practicing litigation law. Yes, SSA law is a far different practice, but if you are involved in litigation, not many attorneys take prisoners. There was no slam or derogatory remark made by exjag. He simply explained it well!!!

This board is a goldmine of information. But it appears to me that the issue was similar to getting handed the encyclopedia, opening up to a random page and then asking someone to read it to you. For the record I am a yankee too, there was nothing harsh in exjag's post. Most attorneys appreciate a direct explanation that they can use to find what they need and research for a long or as short as they feel necessary to get up to speed on a topic.

Exjag certainly doesn't need anyone to defend him, but I'm gonna concur with sealaw, sratty and the hog father and do it anyway.
Like sratty, I'm a ball of nervous energy addicted to reading every little post on the board. I'm also guilty of occasionally posting a dumb question without doing the proper board research. Still, the new poster, aljjustice, from all indications is something more.
I don't mean to impugn your character justice, but your initial appearance on the board indicated you were interested in a state alj gig in new mexico and were interested in the fact that you didn't have to be an attorney to get that gig.
Showing class you wouldn't find on other boards, members here took the time to explain the purpose of this board (the hiring, training benefits and duties of federal aljs), pointed out the differences between fed and state aljs and suggested other avenues you could perhaps use to get the info you desire. One very helpful member even offered to PM with you regarding their own experiences as a state level alj.
Aljjustice apparently took none of these suggested courses of action and, instead, continued to interject into threads with non sequitur and unrelated questions. After finally admitting he/she has no dog in the hunt for a federal alj job, the poster nevertheless continued to drag up long dead threads with only the tedious "can anyone add to this?" bump. When called on it, he/she only invited the repsponding poster to "tell your story."
Such behavior stems from pure ignorance of the boards purpose. Perhaps it was mere exuberance at finding this goldmine of info that led to the faiulure to do even minimal research or even read the FAQs at the start of the threads. But continuing that behavior after being repeatedly advised that this forum isn't the appropriate place for it smacks of blatant trollism.
Of late, this wonderful boards membership consists of knowledgeable and helpful current aljs that only post out of a desire to help others and current candidates that are on edge as they go through a pretty stressful testing process or appealing a dumbfounding cut from the competition. The former shouldn't have to wade through the banal posts of someone unwilling to do even minimal research and the latter don't need the additional stress as they hurriedly open any new post for any possible morsel of information to only find an inane post from a disinterested uninformed person.
In light of that, I found Exjags post to be called for, on point and very diplomatically worded. In fact, I had just authored my own, exceedingly more scathing, post to aljjustice when I saw exjags post. I then decided his was a much better and more civil way to deal with the situation.

I was not aware that DM referred to private messaging; rather I thought the gracious member advised me to provide "direct messages" on the posts.
Nonetheless, I've already apologized. No need to assume or attack my character.
