A likely assumption is SSA won't even be able to get a small class together and still give four weeks notice unless we are talking about a class of 15 or less total. In that nobody is reporting a call today, that only leaves Friday and Saturday to get out notices and still meet the four week notice timeline SSA has been sticking to for new ALJs. Hence, it is likely SSA will give less than four weeks notice to some of the new ALJs for the May 18th start date IMHO.

If offers for May 18th start this Monday April 20th, that is exactly 4 weeks notice, dwindling down on notice as offers roll out. So depending on how FAST people respond... that will have a huge impact on the size of the class and notice time. They want to hire and are sticking to the plan of 500 in 2015-2016, so I bet they do everything they can to get as many on board May 18th as possible.

MPD (glad to see you on here) I think we may see it get down to 2 weeks notice being given.

I have heard that they have given as little as two weeks notice. I don't remember seeing it cut that close, but it could have been. In the old days, 3 1/2 weeks was about standard. I believe I may have seen 3 weeks once. Pixie.

Is there a federal requirement for 4 weeks or 3 weeks notice? My impression is that the govt can give you whatever notice they deem appropriate -- military folks, you want to address this? I always thought even 2 weeks notice was merely customary, not mandatory, in the general business world. #Johnnypaycheck.

For outsiders, particularly those in private practice, it certainly can be a problem. Often when ODAR has hired for two different start dates, they will allow the outsiders who need it to take the later date. I would not be surprised to see an insider heavy May class.

It is very possible for that to be the case 71stretch. It is more likely SSA will make offers to many candidates, but may indeed give them an option for a start date. It may be that SSA may actually hire for both a May and a late June or early July start date at the same time. SSA may throw out offers and see which candidates are able to use the May 18th start date and if not, then the candidate will be slotted for the very next start date. Only time will tell us for sure.

I think it'll be the way MPD suggested--short notice for May for the offerees who can do it with the option of starting with the next class for those who need more notice.

Does anyone know the next start date after May 18? I am in private practice and short notice would create problems for myself, my firm and my clients.

I think it's scheduled for 6/29, although don't cite me as any great authority.

Let me add that they were gracious about giving me time to wrap things up EXCEPT I could not miss training class to do it. That would make it hard with four weeks of training on the horizon.

I once had less than 24 hours notice that I'd be on a ship and getting underway the next morning. Glad my seabag was packed! However, in a non-contingency operational environment, the Navy likes to give several months' notice. Likes to, but doesn't mean you'll get it. Your mileage may vary. Vr/C
