Just watched all of Gaidin's music selections. The music selections are old friends and I am so so greatful for my "friends" here on the board for reminding me of them. You may not know me from Eve, but this place helps me get by. I am listening to Joe Cocker every day now for a long time. Gaidin, you are awesome! Pumpkin, Christina, Gary, et al - Thank you.

Hopefully, this will provide some more old friends.
New York City and its environs
I really can't imagine how to describe New York City other than to say it feels like the center of the universe. I am not a huge fan of really big cities but New York is really something special.
Gene Simmons grew up in New York and Kiss had a fantastic song about the city.
Billy Joel is the most New York person who ever lived.
Ryan Adams loves the city.
Frank Sinatra of course immortalized the city.....
And then there is this one.

Thanks Gaidin. I particularly wish you and Gary great success. I have learned so much from all of your posts! Ditto! You guys have been great! And of course there are many others here that, all combined, makes this almost like a second home. "Almost" because I didn't want to go too far with the home analogy! Perhaps "cyber-home" covers it!

There a concert a few years ago in Woodstock, NY which is just an hour down the road from Albany. There were many great and iconic performances at Woodstock but this one sums up the Board for me. What do you suppose was in the cup from which our beloved Joe was drinking at the start of that performance?
At the risk of drawing ire from their fans, I dare to say that Joe Cocker's performance of this song outshines the Beatles' version.
Of course, I'm a Joe fan - but I also like his cover of "Maybe I'm Amazed" better than Paul's version too. too...
R.I.P. Mr. Cocker - thanks for the music to get you through what ails you...

So true.....With a little help from my friends was written by Paul/John, but Joe stole the song with the Woodstock version! I remember it so well! Ok, just joking, I was not there!

Joe's version of "Help from my friends" is definitely the superior version. I can't say the same about his version of "Maybe I'm Amazed". While great it is not as good as Paul McCartney's version.

So this thread suddenly seems more topical doesn't it.
I am lumping the North Carolina cities together. There are several reasons for this 1. I don't like college basketball and I don't like the Carolina Panthers, 2. South Carolina is the superior Carolina, 3. I am certain someone can discern significant differences between these three cities. I am not that person.
Greensboro, Charlotte, and Fayetteville, NC
North Carolina (Listeni/ˌnɔrθ kærəˈlaɪnə/) is a state in the Southeastern United States. The state borders South Carolina and Georgia to the south, Tennessee to the west, Virginia to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. North Carolina is the 28th most extensive and the 9th most populous of the 50 United States. North Carolina is known as the Tar Heel State and the Old North State.
North Carolina is composed of 100 counties. Its two largest metropolitan areas are among the top ten fastest-growing in the country: its capital, Raleigh, and its largest city, Charlotte. In the past five decades, North Carolina's economy has undergone a transition from reliance upon tobacco, textiles, and furniture-making to a more diversified economy with engineering, energy, biotechnology, and finance sectors.[7][8]
North Carolina has a wide range of elevations, from sea level on the coast to 6,684 feet (2,037 m) at Mount Mitchell, the highest point in North America east of the Mississippi River.[9] The climate of the coastal plains is strongly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the state falls in the humid subtropical climate zone. More than 300 miles (500 km) from the coast, the western, mountainous part of the state has a subtropical highland climate.
Roberta Flack is from North Carolina. She also sounds like an angel.
John Coltrane is a proud son of North Carolina. Jazz is the best thinking music perhaps while you evaluate your GAl you should listen to some Coltrane.
Perhaps after the GAL changes some of you will be going to Carolina in your minds.
Finally, Fayetteville, NC is the home of Ft. Bragg the home of the Green Berets.

Gaidin: Thank you for the reminder of Barry Sadler, his song and the movie based (loosely) on the song. with John Wayne. I actually knew SSgt. Sadler while he was a civilian* toward the end of his life. The Barry Sadler I knew was very personable and fun to talk to. He had done a lot in his relatively short (unfortunately) life. Pix.
While it is true that Fayetville used to house all of the SF groups, 5th Special Forces Group moved to Ft. Campbell a number of years ago. There they are teamed up with the 160th Assault Helicopter Company (Night Stalkers) for special forces missions wherever needed. Not positive, but I belive they are under the operational control of SOCOM out of Macdill AFB in Tampa, FL.
_____ *If one can imagine SSgt. Sadler as a civilian. He never saw himself in that category.

Fargo, ND
I went to basic training with a bunch of guys from North Dakota. Their descriptions of a North Dakota winter are why I have never been to North Dakota.
Fargo is the largest city in the State of North Dakota, accounting for nearly 16% of the state population.[5] Fargo is also the county seat of Cass County. According to the 2014 United States Census estimates, its population was 115,863.[6] Fargo, along with its twin city of Moorhead, Minnesota, as well as adjacent West Fargo, North Dakota and Dilworth, Minnesota, form the core of the Fargo-Moorhead, ND-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area, which in 2014 contained a population of 228,291.[7] In 2014, Forbes magazine ranked Fargo as the fourth fastest-growing small city in the United States.[8]
In 2011, Fargo won The Weather Channel’s “America's Toughest Weather City” poll. Almost 850,000 votes, blizzards, cold, and floods were used to determine Fargo as the “Toughest Weather City” in 2011.[19]
Peggy Lee is from North Dakota.
These ladies are from North Dakota. If you don't believe me just listen to the song. Favorite lyric "We're from the north but not Canada."

My understanding is that Delta Force and one of the Green Berets SoGs is is still at Ft. Bragg. I have actually seen the 5th's facility at Fort Campbell(through the concertina wire). I suspect phoenixrakkasan has more than a passing familiarity as well.

Yes, 3rd SF Group is still at Ft. Bragg.
Delta Force is so secretive it doesn't advertise where it is stationed, but my sources tell me it is Ft. Bragg. Pix.

I know someone who was stationed at Bragg once upon a time. Said the "Air Bubbles" used to jog by family quarters at 6 am or earlier.

It is not necessary to include unit locations in my opinion. Go Army! Beat Navy!

He had a difficult beginning too but certainly a very good run in the middle, as Pix notes. RIP Barry Sadler.

Many will relocate as a result of the ALJ adventure. I found a very useful tool from the State Department. Here is the link: m.state.gov/md79700.htmIt can be used to aid in a future GAL expansion. If it is well liked, it can be added to the FAQ folders. Keep dreaming. Dreams can become a reality with effort and time. Thanks phoenixrakkasan! The cost of living calculator alone is worth its weight in gold. My husband, the violinist/analyst, performed those calculations himself over a weekend to come up with my GAL. I'm not going to tell him about the COL calculator and ruin his moment. Shhhhh.
