Question: what about the qualified 2007-08 people? Are they already merged by OPM into the current cert list, or does SSA merge people after scoring up the 2009 interviewees? Put in another way, is the 450-person cert list a merger of people from last year's cert or not? Yes, last year's still-qualified register members are already included in the applicant pool provided to SSA by OPM.

You should know if you are on a cert by virtue of getting email with attachments notification from ODAR, with forms to fill out, including your GAL. BTW, even if you did all this last year, you must have done it this year as well. You need to fill out a new GAL and ODAR wouldn't want your references to be "stale".

The question appears to show some confusion between a cert and the register. Last year's cert has nothing to do with the people who just got interviewed. SSA hired people off 2 (I think) certs in 2008. There is currently one SSA cert in existance. It contains people from the OPM register some of whom took the exam in 2007 and some who took it in 2008.

Hey All, We assume, or some assume anyway, SSA will make offers to about 150 people in a few weeks, and train them in two classes of 75 each in July and August, AND, we understand that there will be an additional round of hiring of around 50 for September. Actually I think the current plan is for 157, as discussed, for this fiscal year, and another 200 in FY 2010. The first hires for 2010 would be a class of about 50, starting in October. At least that is the way I heard it last week, and I think that is what was said at the conference. Pix.

Thanks for sharing the useful info, Pixie, as always. The number of hires, the timing, as well as the offer dates seem to be on everyone's mind right now...Thanks again for the useful information.

If they're going to hire another 200 in 2010, I guess then they might need to reopen testing again in 2010, or late 2009, before the big purge of everyone at the end of 2010, or would the 2010 hiring be after everyone retests?

The 200 would be after the Register opens in 2010--at least that's the way I understand Pixie.

Sorry--technical difficulties with earlier try. Let's not forget ODAR 2010 begins October 1, 2009, for the Fiscal Year 2010 (Oct. 1, 2009, to Sept. 30, 2010). No idea of what this means for hiring, however.

and since the register expires in Oct 2010, they would have to hire the add'l 200 for (fiscal year) 2010 off the current register - but would OPM open testing again between now and then, just to have everybody expire in Oct 2010?

So let me ask what is possibly a stupid question. Does anyone think that people with lower scores than 60, who have not been asked to interview, might possibly get a chance to interview in the next year?
Also, my understanding is that the whole register "dies out" in fall 2010. So would that mean that the whole application process would begin from scratch?

The nearer to 60, the more likely. But this assumes the FY 2010 hire is done en masse again - another 150. If they do a few 40-50 judge hires, the cert will not reach as far down on the register. For your second question, it appears that way.

Am I the only one who doubts that OPM will go through the bother of retesting everyone unless absolutely necessary? After all, they seem so excited about finding the best qualified applicants the first time around, regardless of the time and effort involved on their part.

I think the new hires in 2010 would have to come from the current register. Look at how long it takes OPM to reopen and grade the exam. As a poster said above, OPM isn't going to reopen until it is forced to do so. SSA is going to hire as many judges as it can while it can. I just don't see the agency waiting around while OPM reopens the exam, and all the delays that entails. Pix.

What will be interesting is to see how far down the Register SSA goes in its future 2010 Cert. Put in another perspective, those who are not chosen this year will have a good chance in 2010...
