Montyburns:"I think one could also argue that there may be less older applicants on the whole, because at some point, folks just get comfortable doing what they do and living where they live, and don't want to move to Tupelo.." monty, monty, monty......you are getting off to a rough start this morning. First kicking us "old guys" and now you lobbed a direct hit on Funkyodar. Ohhhhhh Monty... I take the hits on Tupelo in stride PJ. The more people that think this place blows, the less traffic I have to sit in. And an extra 20-30K a year in tupelo is akin to an extra 50 in some of the rioting, freezing, costs more to park than own a car, popular locations everyone seems enthralled with. As to age, I can personally vouch that Tigerlaw is old as hell. Think he got a mammoth skin for his first birthday. And Hilltopper calls him whippersnapper. I mean, Hilltopper was lead litigator in the original lawsuit of Good Vs. Evil. I won't tell you what side he was on....

It also leads me to doubt that there will be a lot of ALJ hiring after this register is done. If most ALJs last 30 years, and there are only what 1600-2000 in the country, you've got 400 (at least) being hired off this register and another 400 (?) off the 09 register, well that's half your ALJ core right there. nbsp; While it may be true that there are currently 1600-2000 ALJs in the country, I believe it's erroneous to to presume that the 1600 - 2000 number will stay constant. SSA has been pretty open about wanting to change the ways things are done - sharing space, dedicated video rooms in ODAR etc., in order to expand the ALJ numbers - I anticipate the number of total ALJs to increase rather dramatically. While you believe 2009 - 2013 were the golden times for hiring, I differ - we're in the midst of golden times now.

I am acquainted with a half a dozen ALJ s all ... I'm lousy with age but 4 I believe well over 40 and the other 2 could be......legality aside ... I don't believe their concerned with age at all. .... How many judges they need 10 to 15 yrs from now ? Not sure anybody is worried about that given the girth of the gorilla currently in the room

Got bigger fish to fry than to worry about 10 - 15 years from now.

I wrote the brief for "Good" and argued the case before the Supreme - long before you became the "Funkmeister" enamored with the Godfather of Soul. I'm a White Hat sort of guy. Goes with the hair. Which even at my age is still all there ... unlike some whippersnappers and funkmeisters I know. But on to you main point, you'd be surprised how many of us AARP types love the idea of getting away from grid lock, commuter trains, the occasional curfew, and weather so cold you finally put the ice skates away on July 4th. I'll take any number of small town locations over sitting on the 26th floor of a skyscraper looking at frozen lakes or rivers in a city where I can't afford to park a car let alone buy a house. ht

Good to see you again, your judginess. How was the first day at your new salt mine? The first day was wonderful! This is a good group of people. I keep looking for the shackles, but I was told that there aren't any ... Amazing. Gaidin, you can lawyer up as much as you want, but it is still my word. Although if gary can get away with the TM "today," you've got a good advocate. But it is still mine. As to the current turn of the discussion, I recently celebrated my 29th birthday...again. Add that to your anecdotal data. I'm not going to argue with someone who had sufficient judginess (TM) to get hired. Your checks are in the mail.

Outsider has returned! Having spent the last two weeks making plans for turning over my files, contacting my clients and notifying the Courts of my new position, I finally am ready to present my new personna. I discussed the many possibilities regarding my new identity and name for this board. Finally, I decided to go with the recommendation of my four year old grand daughter. She assured me that Gram Pop is the only proper name I should ever use. She is wise beyond her years and I think it would be best if I followed her advice.
I have already been in touch with my new office (Thanks, Hamster) and I am looking forward to starting work at the end of June. It is difficult leaving a firm after 13 years, especially one filled with good people doing good work. But the challenge of whittling down the backlog is one I am eager to face.
P.S. MontyB, I vaguely remember being 40, but that was years ago. I have no doubt that the intervening years have made me a better lawyer and have given me the skills needed to do this very demanding job. That is not to say that I couldn't have done the work when I was younger, but the experience and maturity that comes with age is a valuable resource that should not be overlooked.

Gram pop; a grand name from a 4 year old. Mine as well was carefully selected by my 4 year old granddaughter. (One must note that the latter half of my name carries the long Okie drawl with it in order to be pronounced correctly). Most importantly upon picking up granddaughters from pre-school, every little kid in class comes running up yelling "Hi PapaJudge! Show us your badge!" You young'uns out there will just have to wait your turn to get that kind of professional respect from the people that really count.

I have all of my hair still, just a "slightly" higher hairline and no comb over!
But as far as Tupelo goes, it would be on my short list of places to come back to if I ever left Boise. But all my favorite cities are in crapland and I'm like Funky (except with a full head of hair) and Hilltopper (except about 2 feet taller), you can keep CA, FL, TX, NY, and any other place that is popular with some Judges. Green Acres is the place for me..... Tiger

You know Tiger, Green Acres...all the main characters... dead.
For the young'uns out there: Green Acres was a rural sitcom set near Hooterville and next door to Fred and Doris Ziffel, who "adopted" a pig named Arnold as their "son". Arnold understands English, lived indoors, an avid TV watcher and a Western fan, who attends the local grade school carrying his book pack in his mouth.
To compare to modern TV: just think Kardashians only with a dose of reality.
