In light of all of the rather intense discussions regarding productivity, locations, etc., I felt that I needed to take a breather and try to find a refuge from the stress of the waiting process and retreat, if only briefly, to a kinder, simpler place and time. As luck would have it, while channel-surfing the other night, I found just what I was looking for: "Beach Blanket Bingo" starring none other than Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon. I will readily confess that I always thought that Annette was the cutest Mousekateer and I will unabashedly admit that she was my very first heart-throb. (I was crushed when I found out that she was six years older than I was!). Frankie ("Frankie") and Annette ("Dee Dee") spent the movie singing, surfing and skydiving their way through the summer. It was fun to see that Frankie Avalon's arms were like pencils but I have to admit that he did a pretty good job singing. Annette looked great, as usual. (Wah Wah Wee Wah!!) With special appearances by Paul Lynde, Harvey Lembeck ("Eric von Zipper") and Don Rickles, it was a jolly good time for all of those wild and crazy "kids". Marta "Lost In Space" Kristen also looked pretty good as a mermaid! I gave it a thumbs up. CTB

CTB, I've been dwelling in a "land of both shadow and substance" by watching old episodes of The Twilight Zone. Just seen appropriate for some reason. But you can't beat Annette either.

Beach Blanket Bingo is a bit before my time, but I do remember going to see "Back to the Beach" in 1987, which starred Frankie & Annette. I only went to see it because Stevie Ray Vaughan was in it. He was the best guitarist around and I had seen him live numerous times while in Law School. The movie was horrible, but I didn't care - - as long as I could see Stevie play, even just for second, it was well worth it. Others in the movie are: Connie Stevens, Fishbone, Don Adams, Bob Denver, Alan Hale, Jr., Edd Byrnes, Jerry Mathers, Tony Dow, thingy Dale, O.J. Simpson, and Pee-wee Herman.

I started reading Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" series about a week ago. I am half way through the second book (there are 7), and it is pretty engrossing (read time consuming).
I would also recommend the original Dune trilogy, the Lord of the Rings, the Harry Potter books (7 of those too), the first 3 books on Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever by Stephen Donaldson - all of these books are long and excellent reads.

Talk about time consuming - I just read War and Peace and really liked it. I had foot surgery about a month ago, and knowing I would be laid up for awhile I went to the library and checked out the longest book I could think of. The translation was very good, and I finished it in about two weeks. If you can make it through the first 100 pages it is an enjoyable read.

CTB, I recall the heartbreak of learning that Annette was 6 years older than me, too. She battled MS over the last several years/...

morgullord: I feel your pain. I had to replace Annette with Wrangler Jane and Ellie Mae Clampett.

I had to replace Annette with Wrangler Jane and Ellie Mae Clampett. OK, I see your point. How 'bout we compromise with "High School Musical 2," so you can see bathing suits and read (the lyrics, that is) at the same time?

All for one, our real summer has just begun. Let's rock and roll and just let go to the rhythm of the drum...

Ahem. Gentlemen, gentlemen. Snap out of it.
Allow me to return perspective in one word: "Mary Ann."

I'm with TT on Stevie Ray Vaughan, or Chris Duarte for that matter. A great guitar-slinger beats a beach blanket lip-syncher any ole' day!

skibum: You have rightly hit on one of the most perplexing conundrums of the last 40+ years: Who was cuter? Mary Ann or Ginger? I always had to give a slight edge to Ginger (Wow!). Thanks for the reminder. CTB

I've always found it more perplexing that Mrs. Howe had so many different outfits for just a three hour cruise.....A three hour cruise. And what's with Mr. Howe carrying so much cash?

We are all going to end up on double secret probation if some of the other posters are not circumspect.
