I got the call today for a final interview at Main DOJ. It looks like they have about a dozen or so open interview slots starting in two weeks.
I applied for only one location in the Midwest.
Any advice for this round?

Any advice for this round? Great news. Good luck! I got the call asking for additional supervisor contact info two weeks ago and am still waiting to see what, if anything, that will lead to.

I got that same call the first week in June. That's good news. Good luck.
It will be interesting to see if the process speeds up as the end of the fiscal year (and budget) nears.

A good source has told me that the Miami-OCC has hired somewhere between 17-21 new attorneys and is starting to bring them on board now. Miami's immigration court has numerous open courtrooms, and EOIR is supposed to be putting new IJs in them - hence the hiring spree. They already do VTCs for the kids and their guardians at the Dilley detention center from the Miami courts, so the idea that they are going to put IJs where there is open space for them may make sense if they are expanding the use of VTCs.

Good luck to everyone scheduled for an interview! I don't know where the agency's hiring priorities will be, and I suspect some of the areas where there is a pressing need may have space issues that limit the ability to hire all the judges needed. Nevertheless, I was looking at the Syracuse TRAC site and figured out where the ratios of cases per judge are still the highest, since those would likely be the places hiring is going to be focused in the next year or so. The courts with a ratio of 3000 cases per judge or more are: New Orleans, Houston, San Antonio, Arlington (VA), Newark, Chicago, Baltimore. Some that have between 2000-3000 are: San Francisco, New York, Boston, Atlanta, & Memphis. That does not mean they will not hire in other areas (esp if there is extra space and VTC capability in some courts), but it seems likely that they will try to hire in these courts with high caseloads.

Interesting research aljwatch. Space for IJs is definitely a consideration of where they are filling slots. It would seem the best predictor may be where there is a backlog and space, but I do not know how one identifies where the empty courtrooms are.

It's my understanding that EOIR wants to fill every vacant courtroom. Unfortunately, I'm not sure there is an easy way to find out how many vacant courtrooms remain and where they are located. As told above by Stevil, there has been a lot of hiring by ICE (not only in Miami), the plan being to have the Assistant Chief Counsels in place before the newly appointed IJs take the bench.
Other questions that remain - will this continue into the next fiscal year, what are the next administration's plans?

Just wondering - has anyone who had a second round interview in July 2016 based on their November 2015 application heard anything back?

Just wondering - has anyone who had a second round interview in July 2016 based on their November 2015 application heard anything back? I had my 2nd interview in July from the November application. For what it's worth, the interview panel advised that me that their recommendation would be submitted immediately and that I should realistically hear something in September or perhaps October. (All subject to change).

Thank you! Keeping my fingers crossed that their recommendation was favorable. Thank you. As someone who is pursuring the Immigration Judge position and was just invited to participate in the ALJ testing/inteview, this will be my third trip to DC since March. I hope my on-going investment eventually pays off. If noting else, I'm earning frequent flyer miles!

Congrats to all that were interviewed and selected for a final interview at main DOJ. I was interviewed but apparently didn't make it to the final interview. My inside sources tell me that if you were not with OCC, the odds are slim (not impossible but slim).

Hey Deo, do your sources say that this July pool of 2nd interviews will fill all the remaining IJ positions?

Hey Deo, do your sources say that this July pool of 2nd interviews will fill all the remaining IJ positions? Pretty sure I can answer this, and the answer is no. My references were only contacted in mid-July prior to any second interview, which still hasn't been scheduled. (For all I know, I won't actually get a second interview, but based on the timeline posted above, it seems like a month to 6 weeks between reference calls and scheduling a second interview isn't unusual.)
