Hello all, I'm familiar with this Board and decided to take the leap today and join as there is so much incredible information shared. I received a call today from Falls Church for an Immigration Judge interview for the week of April 4th. I only applied to six locations. Interviews are apparantly continuing!

Hello, this is my first post. It has been so helpful to receive the information on this forum and thread. I applied for an Immigration Judge position in November, 2015. I am happy to report that today I received a call scheduling an interview in early April. I applied to 11 different courts in various parts of the country. Best of luck to all!

Best of luck to those who do get that call to go to Falls Church. I was interviewed recently, and the word was 27 interviews that week and in each of the many more weeks to come. Thousands and thousands applied, hundreds will be interviewed.

Long time admirer of this site as it has great information about ALJ and IJ positions/process, but first time contributor so forgive any errors. Earlier this week I was interviewed for IJ position in Falls Church. I was told that 8,700 applicants applied to Nov. 2015 posting. Second round interviews would be before a DOJ DAG panel, if I got that far. They did not give a clear timeline, simply stating it could be between 8 to 18 months from date of application. Good luck to all!

Out of curiosity, if you don't mind sharing, how many cities did you apply to? I (not smartly apparently) applied to a grand total of 2. I have not been called for an interview (yet or ever), and am pondering whether that has to do with my small city list or just not being what they wanted period. If there are others out there with small IJ GALs who have been selected to interview, I know I can give up the ghost on that one.
Thanks!

Thanks! 6 and well under 6, and received a first interview in both instances. That said, I suspect it matters a lot whether the cities they are focusing on at a given time are on your list. Also, unlike the ALJ process, this process discourages multi-city applications since a separate application was required for each city.

I have received first interviews from both the 2014 and 2015 applications. In both situations I applied to a relatively small number of locales, 6 or fewer both times. The interview followed the exact same format in both instances and was about 30 minutes long. Generally, interviewers are three assistant chief immigration judges. I was never asked a technical question, i.e. testing my knowledge of immigration law. Rather, it was, broadly speaking, oriented toward fleshing out suitability to being an administrative-type judge in a high-volume context. There was no "secrecy" oath in either instance. With respect to where they might be focusing initial efforts to fill slots, I don't know anything specific, but I can say that I have some reason to believe based largely on what I heard from another interviewee that one of the locations on the radar at the moment is Harlingen, TX. Obviously there are many others, also, but I'm reasonably confident of that one. I was told that there were 10,700 applications in 2014 and 8,700 in 2015. I don't know how many unique individuals in either instance applied, e.g. if a person applied to 10 locations, that's 10 applications (not 1), but I believe those to be the raw totals. I can also say that they moved much more quickly -- many months more quickly -- on this go-around for me than they did for the 2014 openings. Finally, they are still filling slots from the 2014 postings, but the takeaway I received is that if you haven't yet heard about a second interview from a 2014 application, then it's probably not looking good for one of those openings. I can't even imagine going through 10,000+ applications in one year, even (or especially) duplicative applications. All the same, good luck wacokid, and thanks for the information!

I typed "d**eos" in my reply, but it's asterisk-ing out the letters "i" and "k" when my reply is visible on the board. Pixie, any reason why? Just curious. Thanks!

For what it's worth, a person in our office has gotten 1st interviews for both the 2014 and 2015 go rounds. This person only put 2 locations down, and was told when he/she interviewed that they appreciated the narrow GAL because they were tired of entertaining so many transfer requests all the time. The implication was that folks with wide open GALs were not as reliable in terms of actually staying where they got put. Sounds like a narrow GAL is an advantage in IJ world so long as they are hiring an IJ for that location.

Maybe, but in conjunction with a first interview they also have you rank all the places you applied to in order of preference, which seems to me would serve the same purpose, from their perspective, as applying to fewer locations . . . if subsequent transfer requests are really a concern.

I tried to research what cities are likely to get a new IJ (or replacement IJ for a retiree) soon, but found nothing of real substance. Does anyone know if EOIR has a list posted somewhere of cities in the most critical need of IJs? Based on Waco's thoughts, I am trying to get a sense of whether my 2 preferred cities are even on the radar for hiring right now?

Word is that EOIR is going to fill IJ slots where there are empty courtrooms not being utilized - not necessarily where the backlogs are the worst. They have a space problem in some cities.

There is a new class starting today for IJ training in Falls Church. Uncertain on the number of students.

I believe they were shooting to have 8-9 in each class, and classes approx. every month to two months. I'm pretty sure everyone being hired from the Aug 2014 ad has already had a second interview, but did hear of an offer that was just made recently. I think I heard there will be at least 300 first-round interviews (which have started and will be going on periodically over the next few months) for the Nov 2014 group. Texas is still an area of great need, so there will be more hiring there. Haven't heard where else they are currently focusing.

Do you mean 300 first-round interviews for the November 2015 (not '14) group? If so, I guess I'm one of them; interviewing in Falls Church on 4/28. Good luck to all.
