I applied in November 2015 for one location (yep, just one), and today (April 11th), received a call about scheduling an interview during the week of April 25th or May 2nd. I cannot read the tea leaves at all on whether there are geographic priorities for hiring but it is obvious that calls are still being made for first round interviews for those who applied in November 2015. Good luck, all!

Without breaching etiquette or confidence, can you share the general nature of what your second interview (questions) was like?

sorry - I am not comfortable discussing the interview. the METRO yellow line goes from Washington National to within one block of the location. easy in and out! inexpensive airfares with Southwest.

three weeks beyond second IJ interview; waiting for a letter. Which applicant cohort was this from? Sept 2014 or November 2015?

I'm new to this board and just getting acquainted with the way this works. I applied for IJ openings in 2014, and then in 2015 I submitted a separate application for nearly all of the openings. My rationale is that I have the flexibility to move just about anywhere. Each of my applications (at least in 2015) was "referred" but I haven't heard anything more. I'm curious to find out if those who've been contacted for interviews would be willing to share a general overview of their resume, to see if there's any consistency in what type of background they're looking for. I have 4+ years as an ALJ in state government, which I thought would be a plus, but I don't really have anything to compare that to. I've read through many of the announcements from EOIR when they've issued press releases identifying new IJs, and the most common experience I've found is within DHS, not as an ALJ. Is there any other info out there?

Paragraphs are a reader's best friend. It's really hard to overuse them.
Welcome to the board. Pixie.

There is a training class going on this week in Falls Church. These new IJs were from the 2014 posting.

Are the new IJs trained first, then invested, or invested first, then trained?

Are the new IJs trained first, then invested, or invested first, then trained? A couple of weeks of training, investiture, a couple more weeks of training/observation. You are now ready to fly solo.

Completely agree that it may not be the most efficient process. It is worth noting that the IJ appointments require a top secret security clearance. It is my understanding that it generally takes between 8-12 months on top of the normal application process to secure the appropriate clearance if you're an outsider.

FWIW, I spoke to an OPM representative this morning and was told that the certificate for the November 2015 opening will close/expire in June.

Actually, hate to disagree, but there is. There is no "roster" in IJ hiring, but there is a certificate of eligibles in all competitive hiring.

For those of us who are unfamiliar with the term "certification," does this mean that no further interviews related to the November 2015 hiring will occur? No further applicants from the November 2015 hiring will be considered? Or is there some other meaning involved?

There is no "certificate" in IJ hiring. Actually, hate to disagree, but there is. There is no "roster" in IJ hiring, but there is a certificate of eligibles in all competitive hiring. I'll go with Waco on this one. There is no certificate for IJ hiring. There is a list of eligible candidates that have gone through the application/interview process and may be hired as IJs. I'm sure it's some kind of crazy matrix that combines the score of your application process, the ratings of your two interviews and then coupled with your list of preferred courts. You can ace the application and interview but if you only have the Garden of Eden as a court choice, and there are no vacancies, you will not get hired. Likewise, you can ace the process but a lower scoring candidate that has courts listed that may have a DOJ priority (possibly detention centers) or have multiple vacancies may well be hired before a higher scoring applicant. As far as expiration. There are applicants from 2014 that are still being hired and will be in class this summer (June and beyond). The interviews for the 2015 announcement are still ongoing. Those fortunate ones will be hired and attend training throughout 2016 and probably into 2017. I would love to hear what The Honorable ALJWatch has to say about all of this.
