I have been told by a person who prefers to remain anonymous that phone calls have begun to schedule interviews the week of May 2.

Wow, before certs even go out!

Actually, for the July interviews/September hiring, the emails to schedule an interview came before the certs did too.

Curious. What happens if an interview is scheduled but the candidate declines to be considered for the only cities she is certed for? Is the interview then cancelled? Seems like ODAR would want to get out certs well before travel arrangements begin.

There's an obvious answer: Call in sick until the interview call comes.

So... you are on at least one cert if you get an interview - right?

So... you are on at least one cert if you get an interview - right? Yes. The SSA ALJ hiring folks don't even know you exist until you're on a cert.

Is there any conventional wisdom about the order in which ODAR contacts people to schedule interviews? Alphabetically? Geographically? In descending order of NOR? Completely random?

The one interview is for every cert that is issued that you might be on for the remainder of your time on the current register. As a result, you need to make this interview count. Moreover, because it will be some time before any of the current applicants are added to the register, you will likely be considered for a position before hundreds are added, another reason to do a good job at your interview.

Is there any conventional wisdom about the order in which ODAR contacts people to schedule interviews? Alphabetically? Geographically? In descending order of NOR? Completely random? NO. There is not anything relevant that you can figure out on this. The people who call to set up interviews merely have a list of so many names that they need to schedule. More than one person is tasked with this so not everyone gets the same person calling them, and each person has a list. They have no clue about your cities, your background, your hopes and dreams. Nada. They are tasked with scheduling and that alone. Some people will get calls before cert emails come out. Some people will get calls after the emails go out. It all happens at the same time and means NOTHING. Do not read into it at all as that is a total waste of time. Good luck everyone!
And BTW, we have all discussed this every time scheduling calls start, so your questions are not new. Everyone worries about these same things each time. L)

Thanks. I generally knew that, but couldn't help double-checking. I guess we should all know relatively soon.

Curious. What happens if an interview is scheduled but the candidate declines to be considered for the only cities she is certed for? Is the interview then cancelled? Seems like ODAR would want to get out certs well before travel arrangements begin. You get ONE interview for SSA. Everyone who is on a cert for the first time is interviewed. If you choose to decline cities, that is separate and has no bearing on your interview. NOW... if you decline the one and only city for which they MIGHT have considered you, hopefully you will make other certificates for other cities later. This is a gamble. You never know what city you may be in true contention for because you have no idea what the scores (NORs) are for the cities on your cert list. You have to be in the top 3 to be considered for an offer for that city. You may find yourself getting an interview and then not getting on another certificate for a while if you decline the cities, but at least you have had your one and only interview and if they want you, and you eventually make another certificate.... you might get the call.
THIS is why it is important to think about your cities and only submit the ones you really can tolerate for at least a year and a half when you submit your paperwork once making a certificate. Once you get ON a certificate, you will get an email with a load of paperwork to return within a week and the city list is included in that paperwork. If you strike a city at that point, it is gone for good so choose wisely!

Woot woot the train is leaving the station! As Jratty says please don't read anything into whether you get called before or after you get the email. A lot of things will be going on at once and a great deal of it is being done by contractors. Your file is in a variety of stacks requiring action and they will get to you as they work through them.
