Your shot at litigating in the Soverign District, featuring Paul Giamatti! www.justice.gov/legal-careers/job/ausa-90The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) handling a docket of social security cases in the Office’s Civil Division. The Office’s social security work generally consists of defending lawsuits seeking to overturn Social Security Administration determinations regarding claims for disability benefits. These are record review cases that involve analyzing detailed medical evidence concerning the plaintiff and applying a complex statutory and regulatory framework governing eligibility for benefits.

I have a standing search on USAjobs - plus I tend to go in periodically and run a search to jobs of interest. Recently a friend told me of a slot they saw and thought it was a perfect fit for me. I had not seen that job and had been on the page in fact that day running my usual search (which is pretty broad) - it is for grade __ to __ in the correct series...so it should have pulled this job. I had to search for it on the DOJ vacancy page - then once I found it there and had the announcement number - use that to find it online... and thankfully it was closing that day.. so I was able to get my application in. But this made me think - I wonder if I am missing other possible jobs and why are they not showing up - anyone else ever have this happen?

It's possible, if your job search is too broad, that you didn't see it in your email notification of posted jobs. I think they limit the email to just 10 postings that are responsive to your saved search terms. As for why it didn't show up when you went in and did an actual search, maybe there was something unique about that posting that didn't match your search terms. To respond to your last question, that might be unanswerable. If we don't get notice of a posting, how would we know if we missed a posting either in a search or an email? I'm not intending to be flippant or insulting. Maybe others have had an experience similar to yours who could be more helpful. Just a thought: if you run into a similar problem in the future, maybe compare the posting with your search terms to see if the search somehow missed the job, or if you need to create/modify your search. Good luck with your application to DOJ.

In reference to the above, I’ve seen jobs posted and found them via direct links that were not searchable via usajobs. SSA will sometimes do this to direct recruit out of law schools, for example.

Every now and then I check jobs at my old law school through Simplicity. Last week I came across an AA position with the Departmental Appeals Board (DAB) for HHS. It was almost identical to this post: aljdiscussion.proboards.com/thread/4514/hhs-hiring-attorneys. The only difference was it said it paid Grade 9 - 15. I couldn't find it posted ANYWHERE outside of Simplicity and I had to apply through there. They are likely looking for recent grads but I applied anyway. All that to say, remember to peak in on your law school's job board from time to time if you aren't already.

Being a fed outsider what does the following mean in a job posting?
"Term - This is a temporary excepted service appointment not-to-exceed 2 years and may be extended for additional periods of time without further competition"
And should anything be read into it other than it is a contract position with a 2 year time limit?

Here's the exact wording:
Salary Range Compensation includes a salary at the Grade 9 to Grade 15 level, commensurate with experience. Compensation includes various federal benefits, as well.

My understanding is this essentially creates a large probationary period in which it is much easier to let someone go. I think this is pretty common these days. When I hired on initially with my Agency, all of us were under these terms. I believe most were made permanent prior to the two year mark, but depending on budgetary concerns and personal performance, it could drag out beyond two years.
