West Point = W.P. >> “Woop”
That demonym has been around for decades, like the Woops’ use of “squid”.

I had heard the Whoops came from the sound the Flying Monkeys made and because what the Monkeys wore resembled the United States Military Cadets' uniform. I do know the Monkeys did the Whoops sound so loved by the Midshipmen—I find it quite annoying. Whether the Monkeys uniform is similar to the Cadets' uniform may be judged by this shot of an actual Flying Monkey:

I was not a Mid when The Wizard of Oz came out, so you may have a point. This would require more historical research into when the Brigade of Midshipmen (or former Regiment of Midshipmen) adopted the catcall.
Such epithets are often based on popular cultural themes, and the double entendre may have been intentional.
It is meant to be annoying to the targets.
The more the better!
(What Boat Schoolers despise being called is a term for a mid-length skirt or dress. If made innocently, they will quietly correct the speaker. If made with hostile intent, they will ignore it.)

Since that story is 3½ years old, I doubt the U.S. Navy will change the ancient historical rank of MIDN, USNR (formerly MIDN, USN).
Another recent uniform change made by the Navy was to eliminate the separate covers (headgear) worn by female officers.
In Magyar (Hungarian) there is only one third person singular pronoun -- Ő.

This year's Mids are fortunate that the game will be played up on the banks of the Hudson. I have never made it to West Point. The USAFA chapel is well worth visiting. USNA has a pretty good one, too — where I sang in the choir for four years. It would be nice to see what USMA has to offer.

Show sportsmanship and professionalism, and stay healthy! After graduation, you are free to transfer to the Air Force. Army and Naval officers are in the real military; why would they want to transfer to something akin to kindergarten? Actually transferring is a whole lot more difficult than one might think. As is graduating from one service school and then being commissioned in another service. Not much done anymore, although they may still reserve a slot or two each year for transfers. Pixie
