Tony Joe White, singer/songwriter died of an apparent heart attack on Wednesday, October 24. He was 75 and living in Leiper's Fork, a rural suburb of Nashville. Born in Louisiana, Polk Salad Annie (1970) was his first hit.
Tony Joe's songs have been recorded by countless greats, including Elvis, Dusty Springfield, Ray Charles, Waylon Jennings, Tina Turner, Conway Twitty and Brook Benton (Rainy Night in Georgia, 1970).
I saw him in concert when he was one of the performers on the show. Such an odd presentation. He did his several songs seated on a stool facing away from the audience. Never did figure that out. The friend I was with, later said to make it even odder there was a small TV on that he evidently was watching. I don't remember seeing the TV, but I do remember him doing Polk Salad Annie.
R.I.P. Tony Joe White.

One of my favorite songs is Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien (No Regrets) by Edith Piaf, a French singer who died back in 1963. It was featured in a Dove commercial a while back, and a snippet of it is in a current commercial, then name of which escapes me. It may have been a commercial for an insurance company.
The girl who sings it in this contest absolutely nailed it. She becomes Piaf, and is only about 11 years old. Piaf's voice is a bit darker, but then she is about 30 years older.
The girl's name is Valentine, and she is Dutch, I believe. She sings the song in perfect French, according to several French people.
When the camera pans to the judges, her family and the audience, it is somewhat distracting, but her voice comes through. Enjoy, Pixie

OK, so no comments on the kid doing the Piaf song, which I think is an injustice to the way she does it.
So here is the original by Edith Piaf herself. When I first heard it, I thought it was an aria, and I went through my opera CD collection looking for arias with which I wasn't familiar, hoping to find this one. Obviously no luck.
Surely someone out there has to find this so moving it brings tears to her eyes. It does to mine every time I hear it. Pixie

If Edith Piaf weren’t already dead, this would kill her.

If Edith Piaf weren’t already dead, this would kill her. I said I think. Nothing like a bit of hedging. That kid sure has a good version, though. I wish it were clean without the conversations.

Both were awesome, and it is wild I first heard this (albeit in one of my favorite movies) in Saving Private Ryan. One of the only movies I can at times exhibit some tears during credits, just in anticipation).

Yes, Edith Piaf was in the background in Private Ryan. Also on at the same time was Bull Durham. I am a channel changer when commercials come on (when I watch commercial stations). So eerie to hear Edith on Private Ryan, then to flip the channel during the commercial to Bull Durham and hear her do No Regrets, although it was mixed way down. What are the odds of that? It made my night. Pixie

In a world of declining numbers Beach Boys Shut down might come to mind, but I'm thinking:

Today in 1956 Elvis' Heartbreak Hotel hit number one on the charts. The song was written by Tommy Durden and Mae Axton. Elvis is listed as a co-writer, but he wasn't. Listing him as a co-writer was the Colonel's way to get a bit more money out of the deal. Back then writers got one Penney for each single sold. So, instead of splitting the Penney two ways, Tommy and Mae split it three ways.
After Mae moved to an antebellum home in Hendersonville (a suburb of Nashville) the piano Heartbreak Hotel was written on was moved there. There it stayed in her living room until her death in 1997. As an aside, I have played that piano.

Pixie - the stories you share had me thinking you are the female version of Dos Equis' "The Most Interesting Man in the World" character. Is there anything you haven't done? With all you know about music and instruments, what is your favorite instrument to play? If you could be on stage with any artist or band, who would it be, and where would you want to play?
