Good afternoon. These are not "Administrative Judge" (Series 0905) positions. These are Administrative Law Judge (Series 0935) positions. These are the same jobs in the Office of Medicare Hearings and Appeals (Deputy Chief ALJ, AL-2, located in Arlington; Associate Chief ALJ, AL-2, 1 each in Irvine, California, and Atlanta) that are being discussed in Christina's post that came on the board yesterday, 31 March.
Respectfully, Tom B

Do any of the OMHA people on here know when there might be the next hire? It'd be a small one, I imagine, but it's been a couple of years since the last one, I think. The last big one was only open for as long as it took to get a max number of applications, and I snoozed and lost. I was on furlough in January 2019, so was not checking as regularly.

I doubt OMHA will hire anytime soon - haven't heard any rumblings either - seems the agency doesn't have enough cases to keep exisitng aljs at a full docket - the backlog is to steadily decreasing. May be a different analysis when OMHA starts doing a 90 day turnaround from rfh to decision - my estimate is that it's about 2 years out though.

I don't like the content, though (obviously not the fault of the messenger). Been a rough few years for us aspirants.

I joined OMHA in the last mass ALJ hiring. There has been some ALJ attrition; however, the backlog is still coming down, even with the ALJ attrition. I believe that next year OMHA will go to a 90 day turnaround for all appeal requests. At that time, the volume of hearings will have substantially decreased, such that it will be possible to get the process completed within the 90 days, for the majority of appeals. In the last two years the yearly closed appeal goal has decreased, and I suspect it will decrease again when it is reset. I do not foresee ALJ hiring for OMHA in the near future. Another item that impacts OMHA is that we are under a hiring freeze.

Yeah, these come up every now and then, but it's not what intothewild was referring to. MSPB is not ALJ, for one. For two, as you note, they always want people who already have the substantive law background. I don't, so that rules me out. Rules a bunch of us out, for that matter. It's just all bad news on the ALJ front and has been for three years or so. Pessimism abounds.

Has any agency hired ALJs - brand new or experienced- since the July 2018 EO?

Has any agency hired ALJs - brand new or experienced- since the July 2018 EO? Yes - DOL has hired a small number for its Office of Administrative Law Judges - OALJ.

DOL, OMHA, DOT, had ALJ postings on USAJOBS after July 2018. Coast Guard just advertised recently.
Not DOT, I can't remember the agency but they deal with FAA licenses and some other transportation related matters.

Has any agency hired ALJs - brand new or experienced- since the July 2018 EO? In addition to those mentioned, Department of Education hired one or two, as did the Drug Enforcement Agency as well.

Truth. But for most of us on the street (not in ALJ positions), the news has been miserable. No "big hire" since 2019, I think (OMHA). And not much on the horizon.

OMHA hired approximately 60 ALJs during the summer of 2019. Those of us who missed the final cut still feel the sting.
