If the hearings are conducted entirely in Spanish, why would they take longer than hearings conducted in English? At my prior office I used an interpreter maybe once a month. At my current office I use an interpreter on probably close to 20% of my hearings, and no one ever suggested that we were expected to do fewer. (And with the phone hearings and phone interpreters, it definitely takes a lot longer). So I am guessing the Puerto Rico ALJs had the same expectation of 600 per year. Point well-taken, but I thought the MEs and VEs did English and the judges had to translate claimant and rep questions. I could be wrong about that. The entire hearing is conducted in Spanish in PR, including the expert testimony. The only translating that happens at the time is the job of the hearing reporter, who takes notes in English.

I am a retired ALJ. I'd like to find out where one goes to see if OHO is hiring retired ALJs.Does anyone know where to go to check? I'd like to come back to work full or part time.

You must not be a former HOCALJ or a part of the coveted ring club. Seems only favorites get the benefit to come back. Two years ago I got a remand from the prior CALJ. I checked the date and said, I thought she was retired? Well she is retired but was back as a senior ALJ They say activity is heavily considered, I say BS. If you are connected you can come back If not then…..

No HOCALJ and no "ring." But I thought they needed people pretty quick. I'm here if it changes and they need a retired judge of 16 years service.

Internal SSA email sent out this morning regarding updated (from 2015) procedures in handling ALJ transfers. Appears the first moves are being made soon. Curious if any more ALJs are hearing about transfers?

I heard from some friends that NTEU is telling their members that they expect a hire of 25 this FY.

Does anyone have any intel on the timing for the issuance of the forthcoming vacancy announcement(s)? I am wondering whether the announcement will be posted over the next couple of months or towards the end of the year.

I’d think it would be posted in a way time that the new hires will be onboarded before Sep 30.

There is no register but those names are on a list somewhere. I was on the register. I was told that there is a list. On 9/13/2018, I got a message that included this: "OPM terminated the administrative law judge (ALJ) register for any purpose pursuant to 5 U.S.C. A700 3317. However, based upon your status as of July 10, 2018 you have the option to have your contact information, geographic preference, and if applicable veteran status, distributed to agencies for their use as a recruitment source, while agencies develop their own ALJ selection policies and procedures under Schedule E. If you give consent, OPM will provide the above information based upon your application of record. There is no guarantee of employment consideration if your contact information is provided to hiring agencies."

And on that list are a number of current agency employees-- already background checked, vetted internally, and up to speed on the law and agency workings. Just saying.

As another person who got the same OPM email, I hope they use the list. Honestly, it would be silly for them not to. Everyone on the list passed initial screening and scored well enough on testing that included writing and a panel interview. But since it makes too much sense, then I’m sure they won’t bother looking.

Even better would be to contact those of us that interviewed in June 2019 before the hiring freeze to see if we’re still interested. My references were checked plus consider all the time invested in interview process. If only a small hire, that would speed the process along. But I’m thinking that since there was a detail for an admin person to help schedule interviews and such, that will not happen. Only wishful thinking on my part.

I think whoever they hire will have to be reinterviewed. Possibly not in person this time. It is almost certain things like references will get rechecked. 2019 was a long time ago.

Not true, I know of 3 former HOCALJs returning as Senior ALJs for part time work this summer. I believe you need to be somewhat recently retired, like in the last year, but I am not exactly sure on that part!

It was just shared with me that in the “near future” SSA will begin advertising for new ALJ hires on USAJOBS.

Apparently the sooner bets wins over the later one.
