It was just shared with me that in the “near future” SSA will begin advertising for new ALJ hires on USAJOBS. Just heard the same Same- and in a way that makes it pretty definitive and not just a rumor or hope. No ideas as to specifics other than it will appear on USA jobs, with hope for a start date prior to end of FY.

Just heard the same Yep, came here because I just got a message from a coworker, ALJ hiring vacancy will be posted soon on USAJobs. Still don't know about the status of the post-licensure requirement (for those on the cusp like myself).

Good luck to all my fellow GS-12 attorney advisors. It's our only chance to get a non-management promotion. Hopefully, SSA doesn't change anything and completely block us out from even applying. I wouldn't rule it out though with how little they care for our position.

Good luck to all, great job if you can get it. For insiders, you have a pretty good sense of what the job is, so I'd say you know what you are getting into. For any outsiders who are thinking of applying- if you want a former outsiders perspective, feel free to message me- there are some definite drawbacks, and it is not for everyone (particularly if, like me, you were not just an outsider to SSA, but the federal government as a whole).

I wouldn't rule it out though with how little they care for our position. Just an FYI, there have been a handful of senior attorney vacancies on USAJobs lately, such as this one that just closed a couple weeks ago in Georgia -> www.usajobs.gov/Job/643989500 There was another one in Chicago before that. There are some non-management promotions at SSA other than ALJ, they're just few and far between.

I'd say there is a .01% chance that a senior attorney job would go to someone not in the office listed.
Either way few and far in between, yet OHO can't figure out why OHO is basically at the bottom of all 400+ government agencies.

If you have judicial experience but no ssa experience do you have a chance at the job?

If you have judicial experience but no ssa experience do you have a chance at the job? The prevailing wisdom appears to be that insiders will be who management wants to hire. But, truthfully, no one really knows how it will play out. The hiring has never happened outside of OPM (or, at at least not in a very long time if it ever did), so this will be a first. I would think the agency would probably try to avoid hiring a class made up entirely of insiders, just because that is just asking to have this new found hiring freedom stripped away. But, at this point it is mostly just guesses and conjecture, with the occasional nugget from someone actually in the know.

If you have judicial experience but no ssa experience do you have a chance at the job? As my USAF missile squadron Operations Officer told me decades ago as a young 2LT, if you don't apply, the answer is always no...

My class had predominantly outsiders with substantial litigation experience. Many are now HOCALJs. Insiders do not necessarily have an inside track. But that is just my opinion. Knowledge of the program is really irrelevant. The ability to manage your docket and make timely policy compliant decisions all with an even and respectful temperament is the key. I don’t mean to start a war here - but I do need to point out some contradictory facts based on observation and experience.

My guess is the majority will be external hires. If the Agency hired a ton of insiders, they’d have a shortage of writers, group supervisors, and HODs. Also, if the Agency has been granted specific funds for this hiring, I imagine they want to utilize the new FTEs versus “promoting” existing FTEs (not my area of expertise but I know it’s a factor to consider).

Your class came in from the old OPM system, though (which favored litigation experience). Pixie and others sure seem to feel that SSA has wanted control to pick their own folks for decades, and now they have it. I should note that I hope you're correct, since I fall into the outsider with lit experience category (adjudication experience, too, but a different program). That does not seem to be the prevailing gossip on these boards, unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on where you sit). Still, as I noted, you have to be in it to win it.

Insider with 11+ years of experience here. Frustrated with the lack of advancement opportunities in the agency and really hoping that all that policy knowledge and time investment will count for something. Most likely, I'll be moving on in a year or so if I don't get hired this go-round. I was in the 2018 cohort and made the register at that time.

Just curious. How soon will new judges be able to work at home? How many days a week can judges work from home?

Just curious. How soon will new judges be able to work at home? How many days a week can judges work from home? The answer used to be two days a week after one year and it needed to be within two hours of your duty station but everything is being renegotiated with Covid protocol.
