Gaidin said: This is a culture thing. If you want that you need to create a culture with your classmates. 7 years on some of my classmates gather for Zoom retirement parties, send pictures of grandchildren, and occasionally get together in person. But we made an effort to build those relationships. Not everyone in our class sought that but a lot of us made that effort. ———————————- It makes me wonder what happened to the crockpot that was initiated by the Baby Judge Class of 2016? Gaidin can correct me but I believe the crock pot was 2015. I was in a 2016 class and I agree you need to cultivate the culture of friendliness. I started a group email list and people planned many activities throughout training. I love the time I spent with other fellow baby judges in Alexandria. I am still in touch with several and look forward to our paths crossing again.

Question for those whose in-person training bracketed a three-day weekend (like Group 1’s training did last fall when they had in-person training Monday, 11/7 through Friday, 11/18, with Veterans Day falling on the Friday in between the two weeks): Did most people stay in town for the three-day weekend and if so, were there any fun group plans? Or did people jet home or to parts exotic? If we are so fortunate to get the call, I will be more than happy to make group plans throughout the training!

Just that going forward, it would parallel attrition. Who knows how/if the new spending caps will impact things. Speaking of…anyone have ALJ numbers through April or May? I’m looking for the current total of ALJs and/or number of ALJs who have left since Oct 2022 (FY23). sorry… just saw this… per CPMS, Oct 2022 duty ALJs was 1231–as of May 2023, that number is 1205

What was the word on the total number of ALJ's the agency is seeking to maintain? Any idea how this will relate to hires this year in regards to actual and projected attrition?

Nope. The crockpot class was the summer of 2016. Most of us started the last week in June, with a few the 1st week in July. Training was mid-July to mid-Aug 2016. This was during a big hiring push and there were were several classes in 2016.
Gaidin , of course, was our fearless leader and the purchaser of the crockpot, which I believe he left for future classes, but as far as I can tell, no one felt worthy to assume the mantel. (Replicating Gaidin 's amazing crockpot barbeques would be a daunting task....)

rusty ? Where'd you park the crock pot? It was a 2016 model. Several updates and new editions to POMS and HALLEX since then. Completely inappropriate for use for this class. Carry on.
This is from 5+ years ago.

What was the word on the total number of ALJ's the agency is seeking to maintain? Any idea how this will relate to hires this year in regards to actual and projected attrition? the proposed magic number was to maintain around 1200. The 1205 number I got from CPMS included ZERO attrition for the past month. We are now less than 4 months from FY2024, so it’s tough to think the number of attrition will drop far below 1200. Honestly, with all that is going on, justifying a larger hire seems unlikely

roymcavoy how many do you think will be hired? What is your best guess?

roymcavoy how many do you think will be hired? What is your best guess? I think there was probably a point earlier this spring when they were planning to hire that 55-60 number. I think that several factors (less than anticipated attrition, budget, less than anticipated case receipts, etc) have whittled that number down. I hate to say it, but my guess would be half of that—25-30 or so.

SSA is now putting out a podcast (who knew). The first episode was mildly informative. www.ssa.gov/news/audio-series.htmlThere is apparently a new centralized hiring department. News to me. I'm not sure if this is just in reference to FO hires, or if ALJs will be addressed by this new office. As an ALJ is a "public facing" position, I suspect it might be. Not sure what this means for time tables, but its a data point (or maybe its just noise). But something I didn't know before today and thought someone might want to know it, or may know more about it.

But something I didn't know before today and thought someone might want to know it, or may know more about it. It certainly explains the flurry of hiring contact reps and HR specialists. I know from my USAJOBS alerts re: Social Security Jobs in my locale that Region 4 has seen a lot of new postings for field office staff and HR staff. Which may be a positive for ALJ hiring in the future. More processed claims also means more state level denials which means more appeals which means more work for OHO. So it may be next year that magic 1200 ALJ number may need to increase significantly.

Certainly hope the agency hires as many judges as it can...2024 is anything but certain in congress and the backlog is making its way to ALJ level. Hiring as many as possible now just makes sense.
Also, is the next group hired going to be the last from the April 2022 alj announcement? Seems like that may be the case.

This is from 5+ years ago. IIRC rusty has that crockpot at his house. I literally bought the night I flew into DC. I went to the store for victuals and bought it on the appliance aisle. I recommend it highly. One of the best small dollar purchases of my entire life.
