Starting a new thread for those who may have questions about the announcement or application process (which do not violate Board rules to post or answer). The posting states the application period is open now (10/07/2024) to 10/09/2024. Best of luck to all who desire to serve the American public as ALJ. www.usajobs.gov/job/812698600

For those who have not done this before (open information - nothing secret)-be sure to have your USA Jobs resume updated, vet info (DD 214 and VA documentation), 9 references' info, law school transcript, State board certification, and geographic area location preferences ready. It took me about 4 hours.

I'm assuming you were referring to your application. it's Monday morning, and I am a bit slow. Pixie

Best of luck to every applicant!
Also, it's funny how the USAJobs resume builder only allows inputting the month and year and gives no option to include the day.
And then the posting says "if you only provide the month and year of an ending date of employment, we will assume the end date is the first day of the month. If you fail to provide the month and date of the starting and ending dates of employment, your starting date will be assumed to have been the last day of that year and your ending date will be assumed to be the first date of the year."
Good times.

Got my app in. Good thing I saved all of the info I used the last time around. Good luck to everyone who applied!!!!
I did not use the resume builder. Is there any advantage to using that over my standard resume?

Good luck all! I just started a new job, so I've decided to let this one pass me by. However, I wish you all the best.

Is there any information about which offices are actually hiring new judges?

Reply to Pixie - I was up doing this, and it's Monday. 4 hours cutting and pasting from the last resume builder and ordering (online) bar certification and vet status. (and updating the 9 references).

Apparently, with approval, SSA folks can ask for AWT time and not do it in the wee hours of the morning.

It's buried in the assessment questionnaire. You have to click the link. Glad I didn't waste my time writing up all this stuff only to get ambushed by the nine references requirement. I have a limited geographic availability and nine references means everyone in my professional life would know I'm applying to this. Good luck to everyone who pursues this.

What does someone who never litigated do to find three opposing attorneys?

The three opposing attorneys should only apply to non-Feds. I ignored this to no detriment. I used the most recent relevant references and was appointed.

Or someone (like me) who's been in a judicial role for years. Also, you have 2 days to get all these names together.

This is my second time applying (applied in 2022). I worked as a claimant attorney for seven years and now have been an attorney adviser/decision writer for six years. Last time I got my application in just under the wire when I saw the window was prematurely closing, but my essays were not in great shape since I was planning on finishing them the following day - some were only a few generic sentences. I got a confirmation that I was qualified for the ALJ position but never got an interview and I wasn’t expecting one.
In the interim, I worked on those essays and they’re in pretty good shape - the new questions are very similar to the old ones, so I should be able to mostly use the work I’ve done.
It strikes me that a lot of these applications are bound to look a lot alike! Does anyone know what makes someone a good candidate? Is it really mostly a matter of writing good essay responses, having a solid resume, and/or having great references? Or is there some secret sauce that’s undefinable?
(Please don’t take this as a request for disallowed information. Just some general advice is extremely welcome; I intend to use these three days to make my materials look as good as I can.)

I litigate a decent amount as a fed and I don't feel comfortable listing any opposing attorney because literally every litigation matter I've dealt with that involved opposing counsel never involved the same lawyer twice. I'm supposed to list some rando 1st year employment associate from a mill from 2 years ago?

The Questionnaire says that you "should" list judges and adversarial people; obviously I'm reading that as a subtle "you're shooting yourself in the foot if you don't". Coming as a career solely as a disability representative, I'm just going to get nine and let the government decide if it works. We can't do what we can't, right?
