I received this from a board member:
"There were "a couple thousand applications".
They continue to review applications to determine who will be candidates to be interviewed."

They cannot hire because the agency will not have a senate confirmed COSS after next week and the senate confirmed deputy position is vacant. Any ALJ hiring will have to happen after new appointments are made by the incoming administration (senate confirmed or recess appointments) Was the last acting commissioner confirmed by the Senate? She hired two classes of ALJs. Everything I can find just says that she was appointed the day the commissioner and deputy commissioner were fired.

You are correct - the last 3 Senate confirmed Comishs were Astrue, Saul, & O’Malley. Colvin, Berryhill, & Kijakazi were all just acting. www.ssa.gov/history/commiss.htmlActing Comish Kijakazi was in charge during the 2022-2023 ALJ hiring rounds 1 & 2. O’Malley was sworn in 12/2023. So the two rounds were under an acting one…. Which we won’t have as of 11/30 unless Biden appoints some sort of Acting Comish to bridge the time between now and when Trump announces his pick for Comish.

Pixie And they are being reviewed in accordance to a multi-step process. The goal is to hire new ALJs this fiscal year. My crystal ball says by September 2025, unless things go awry with a new administration, we will have a new ALJ class. Just hang on, last time they stopped the acceptance of applications at midnight of day one. This time they did not. You need to go back in time (10 years??) to when thousands of applicants applied at once. That actually took about 2 years for OPM to process, test, interview and generate the list of eligibles. This is not a race, but a marathon. But you already knew that. Stay strong, go about your lives, enjoy the holidays and do not worry about this process for the near future.

Pixie I heard from a reliable source that some ALJs received requests for availability to conduct interviews in March. It appears they plan to proceed with interviews and hires as scheduled. However, with current developments resulting from the recent election, only time will tell if SSA will be permitted to proceed as planned. I'll spare you my predictions, just be prepared and ready for anything. It would probably be best to also manage your expectations. Hang in there and keep the faith no matter what comes our way.
