Maybe it’s just me, but this ALJ posting round seems… tame on this board. Almost quite. A lot less posting than in the past. Are there just a lot less people applying or is everyone playing it close to the chest and not willing to be chatty?? I find it interesting. I know a handful of people sitting it out this round. Will be interesting when the inside chatter comes out about how many apps were actually submitted with this 3 day window. PTSD, maybe?

Folks are busy with their apps. I so enjoy watching this happen over the years. (I know, I'm bad)

I wouldn't count on being able to work remotely several states away at all, some offices require physical presence within the local commuting area even if you're working remotely at the ADS on any given day.

Decision writers can request AWT for the time it takes them to apply for the position, meaning they can apply during their workday. I wonder what effect this might have on the applicant pool.

Dominic would have a permanent residence in the local community even if he flies back to Maine every month.

I can’t imagine it will be too large. I’m a DW and happily took the AWT but I was going to apply regardless. Could’ve just taken the day off too if it came to that.

My understanding is telework is supposed to be performed at the designated AWS which is required to be within the local commuting area, in this scenario Dominic would be violating his telework agreement.

There's usually a flurry of activity, questions about time frames, numbers, etc. I'm expecting a turn out like we had in 2016... maybe 3,500 applicants?

I’d like to ask a more specific kind of question using a hypothetical if that’s ok: Dominic lives in Portland, ME with his wife and two young children. His family will not move. He accepts an offer from the Mt Pleasant OHO, planning to transfer closer to his home in ME as soon as he can; let’s say this is 15 months. My question is, during those 15 months, how often might Dominic reasonably see his family? Could he work from home in Maine 1/2 the time? 1/3 of the time? Thanks Reasonably see his family question is nearly impossible to say as it depends on their specific HO - if he has to go in for hearing 1-2 days a week, they will need an extra day window at least for travel. So at the least maybe see the family 1/2 of each week for at least 15 months but realisitclaly like 2+ years. Note that I know of ALJs who have been on waiting lists for their “home” hearing office since 2019 (if not earlier). You may be able to put your name on a list in 15 months, but that list could have 10 more senior ALJs ahead of you on it so when they work the transfer list you won’t even be asked if someone ahead of you says yes. It’s a big gamble and big amount of time lost with his family if he accepts a location that far away from his home base. Also consider, if your home has 1 HO in driving distance or 5 - that makes your odds better at getting off the transfer list “sooner” than later, but again— there could be 10 ALJs already on the list for each of those locations.

How many cities are on the list posted a few days ago? At least every city must have at least one vacancy. Maybe two?

There's usually a flurry of activity, questions about time frames, numbers, etc. I'm expecting a turn out like we had in 2016... maybe 3,500 applicants? I noticed that as well. But probably a few reasons: 1) between 2008-17, hundreds of ALJs were hired; 2) during that time, a playbook became well-developed; 3) that all changed w Lucia. Since then, there have only been a few, small ALJs hirings. I’m not sure we know how it works. Plus there was that abortive hiring in 2019 or whenever. As a result this board was simply inactive for a long time. So, just a different environment. I know this board was very helpful to me becoming an ALJ. Hope I can be a little help and encouragement to others!

At least every city must have at least one vacancy. Maybe two? 38 cities on that list. But also the August report was 1146 active judges with an (apparent) goal to always have 1200. That’s what made me guess around 100. If the Agency hires to 1250ish they won’t have immediate attrition to below 1200. Could be (probably is) wishful thinking

Got it, thanks. I actually do have quite a few HOs near my home base (I don’t really live in Maine like poor Dominic).

Did anyone post the most recent transfer list openings?

I will throw in some comments that I hope are helpful.
I applied in 2022, when you had to be fast to get your app considered. It was a one-day window, as it turned out, but it was unclear whether all apps submitted that day would be considered, or only a first batch. The assessment questions are similar but not the same. Since we have more time, our answers can be more carefully crafted.
For those of us who were on the register, the resources on this board were invaluable. Things are definitely still in flux, so there is less solid data about the process now, but the sharing and caring are unchanged.

As someone who applied again this time, I'm hoping the relatively low amount of traffic on here reflects a lower number of people applying. Good luck everyone!
