Faxed documents last Friday at 12:40, got the interview set up call this morning at 10:45. Waiting for travel authorization. Meanwhile, tentatively booked flight and hotel through the govt travel people. Can't finalize without billing authorization, however. Hotels suggested are full. Suggested alternative is a couple of miles away, and exceeds the government per diem by $100 per night. I can't say that actually getting the interview call has relieved any stress - just provided different stressors. OMG! I'm just seeing this. What is going on in DC that all of the hotels are now booked? Well good thing you were looking. I wasn't sure if we could use the government travel people to tentatively book travel. Found a great solution to the hotel problem! www.walmart.com/cp/Camping/4128

If the Leesburg hotels (Hampton and Homewood) are full, I would recommend the new Hilton Garden Inn in Shirlington (4271 Campbell Ave., Arlington, VA). It is about 1.5 miles Away, so you will have to take a cab to/from the airport and to/from the interview, but it is brand new and there are lots of restaurants and a grocery store within 2 blocks of the hotel. I don't know about the price, though.

Worse case scenario: you fly in the day of the interview, the plane crashes and you survive (okay, maybe not that bad but the flight is canceled), will SSA allow you to reschedule your interview because of circumstances beyond your control?

I read somewhere (here, I think) about someone who was allowed to do the interview by VC when they had a flight cancel/delay issue.

Another great story: So, I FINALLY reached the travel woman. She said because my interview was in the 2nd week, she'd have to call me back; she's very busy with the first week. BUT, then she couldn't even find me in her system as one of the folks interviewing. It took her 10 minutes and she said something about finding me one place but not the other. (I'm thinking, okay, if you have 10 minutes, let's just get on with this!) I then said, "hey, from what I hear, you're going to be inundated with calls for the first week because those are the dates left and folks don't have calls yet, so maybe we could go ahead and get these travel arrangements done before you get hit with that?" She said, "I know, I know... The other people (HR) are in another area. I'll just have to call you back." Gotta love the coordination!

It isn't as if they haven't done this a LOT of times, not always with this many applicants and a short time window, but still. You would think they would have come up with a smoother way to do all this. For those of us who haven't even started jumping through this new set of hoops, it just adds to the stress.

Did the travel agent reserve a bunch of rooms with the anticipation that interviewees are coming? Maybe the rooms are all booked for that reason.

Does the call show up with an area code on Caller ID?

I booked at the Hawthorne Suites in Alexandria. They have no shuttle, so you will have to rely on taxis or a rental car. It is about 2 miles from the interview site, but a hotel source stated to give myself about 45 minutes due to traffic in the area. I was able to reserve a room for the per diem rate.

Try Sheraton National or Hyatt at National. I could not find anything at the government rate but they do have vacancies for the evening of the 8th.

I don't think Skype would/could be used or could it? I think they used VC equip at an SSA office near the candidate's home. The federal DC per diem rate through 6/30 is $226, according to a chart I found on the GSA site. I'm not sure that's the applicable rate, but I would think so. Does the phone number show up on caller ID when they call you to set up the interview?
