Gotta say I am surprised by Cincy's rank. Is there something wrong with the office? If someone doesn't want to go public about it that is fine but a PM would be appreciated. Other apparent oddities: Houston N (Downtown) -7 Fresno -5 Huntington -4 (I thought it would be much higher) Fort Myers SO -2 Eugene -2 Jacksonville -1 Eugene has received at least one new hire from several of the more recent certs. Beautiful area to live in, (particularly if you are a duck or a Duck) know nothing about the office.

Those numbers are a bit skewed because each judge can list multiple places they want to go. I know there are only 2 judges on the transfer list to leave my local ODAR right now (one has declined at least twice) and yet the numbers show "5" wanting to leave. One judge has 3 places he wants to go and the other has only one. Not sure where that fifth one came from unless it's the one that transferred out a couple of months ago and I know she only had one on her list.

Yeah, these #s, while somewhat illustrative of the popularity and unpopularity of some places, need to be taken with a huge grain of salt.
For instance, 2 of the listed transfer requests from my office are for the same alj and that judge already left in october after getting hocalj in another office.
Meanwhile, one of the reported requested transfers in to my office is from an alj I personally know and that judge has turned down the transfer 3 times.

Fred, and all others interested, Mount Pleasant, SC is actually a very nice place bordering Charleston, SC, one of the top performers on the list. I think your reference is really to Mount Pleasant, MI.

Mt. Pleasant, MI is pretty isolated, but it's a beautiful community. the numbers are a bit skewed, in that there are only 8 judges there, but 10 transfer requests. Further, 2 of them are for-sure stays and 2 are brand new and at training (which I think means they cannot put in a request yet, who nows what the ultimate plan is). so I guess the other 4 judges have multiple places listed. so yay!! crapland!!! keep openings in mt. pleasant. works great for me.

I know an applicant that was offered Mt. Pleasant, MI, last hire and they turned it down.. Being a little remote, there is no way to easily fly in and out on the weekend to go home..

Sounds likely. I never heard of Mount Pleasant (and the state wasn't listed), so I google-mapped it and the first page of hits were all for South Carolina, so I didn't drill down any further. Sho 'nuff there is a Mount Pleasant, Michigan, which makes more sense. However, if memory serves, Charleston, South Carolina, has one of the highest costs-of-living in the United States. Cost-of-living did not seem to hurt San Francisco, San Diego, or Washington, DC, so maybe it is not a big factor.

Like Fresno is to California, Houston is to Texas. The so-called "Cancer Coast" composed of Harris County (Houston proper), Fort Bend, Brazoria, Galveston, Chambers, and Liberty Counties is one of the most vile, nasty places on earth. It feels like a third-world country.

Spreadsheet anyone? You can slice-and-dice the numbers any way you want. I think it's more interesting to look at the offices with lots of requests out but no requests in. By that standard, the stinkiest places are Johnstown, PA, Mount Pleasant, SC, San Juan, PR, and Fort Wayne, IN. Fred, I was wondering about Johnstown myself - why is it so bad? Perhaps someone could explain, but I don't think it is a sick building issue...PM is fine as well.

Thanks for the guidance on Fresno and Houston guys. The only part of California I have ever been to is Fort Irwin and I feel confident that Fresno is better than that.

So with discussion from another thread about the AALJ contract provision of working the entire transfer list before going to new hires to a city, I guess having a city that has a negative number next too it on your GAL is a good thing.

Isolated, economically depressed, terrible weather (even by Pennsylvania standards). I guess. But there is some skiing and whitewater rafting and some cute towns nearby. But not a place that is a weekend trip home drive for me. Flights are expensive and Pittsburgh is like 2 hours away! I suspect there's quite a few coal industry related disability cases there from folks of that era. Could also become a future fracking disability claims location, I guess!

Thanks for putting this together, everybody. I know it's not 100% accurate and is a huge pain to compile, but it lets those of us going through the current process dream a little. (Incidentally, I'd be pretty excited about most of the cities at the top of the Crapland Derby standings. Maybe not Mt. Pleasant, which seems pretty darn isolated.) LOL @ "Crapland Derby" !!!

That is how I understand it. Given that in some locations what appears to be a mass exodus is really just a few folks who have 3 places on their transfer list and some people are on the list but do not intend to exercise the option at this time. I still don't see how the places with high positive numbers will be hiring soon unless there is a massive retirement boom in one of those offices. If nothing else this is something new and shiny to obsess over so I am glad to have it. I had grown bored with the same tired topics.

It feels like a third-world country. That's one of the more bizarre assessments I've ever read. I'm not a huge defender of Houston by any means, and it certainly has its issues, but equating it to a third-world country is laughable. I don't know that the NFL would schedule a Super Bowl in an area like that on more than one occasion.

Hopefulalj, I don't know, IIRC, they have had more than one Super Bowl in New Orleans...

The reason so many are trying to leave Augusta is because they are closing the office due to sick office issues.. The office has leaks and mold and the landlord will not cooperate. They are leaving one Judge there as a permanent remote office in another building. Thay are trying to relocate all of the other Judges to offices they want to go to.. This may create an anomaly in the transfer list for a shoort period of time. Does this mean that Augusta will be closed permanently or just temporarily?

Augusta, permanently at this time. Who knows what the future (2 or more years may bring)??
