The only part of California I have ever been to is Fort Irwin and I feel confident that Fresno is better than that. Yes, definitely. I was a little harsh on Fresno. You can live in the Sierras and commute down the mountain to Fresno; or try living in Visalia and commute up to Fresno. Sequoia NP and Redwood Mt are awesome. There also be the curviest road ever. Local told me it was "windy, windy, windy". so curvy there's no curve signs. I've been on the Dragons Tail in the Smokies with 240iish curves in 7 miles and it is straight by comparison. So curvy I saw my own tail lights.

Well if that's true, you'd just love Johnston PA - those mountains got nothin' on the Smokies!! LOL. Both have lots of roadkill too - yeehah! The talk about Cincinnati got me thinking of the old show WKRP - that's about how much I know about that town

Two weeks ago I was in the smokies and transited a 360* curve. Tunnel then overpass. It startled me. Just like a corkscrew. I reject the Road kill reference but know some folk who wouldn't. Waddya say chess parent. Got a road kill pun?

@ hopefulalj : What can I say? For two years I lived a stone's throw from the Houston Bissonnet ODAR office, worked downtown, and drove Southwest Freeway (US 59) daily (typical commute shown below). That's my honest opinion of Houston. 100-degree temperatures with 100% humidity and mold growing on everything. It is one of only four cities omitted from my GAL. You are welcome to it.

QUOTE: "Yes, definitely. I was a little harsh on Fresno. You can live in the Sierras and commute down the mountain to Fresno; or try living in Visalia and commute up to Fresno." I am somewhat surprised that no one has mentioned the objective criteria found at www.bestplaces.net in evaluating whether a particular city is "crapland". Specifically, they have the following general headings: Overview, People, Health, Economy, Housing, Rankings, Climate, Crime, Comments, Transportation, Cost of Living, Religion, Voting. As an example, since the poster favored Visalia as a place to live over Fresno, it might be informative to know that the crime rate in Visalia is a 6 Property Crime and a 6 Violent Crime which are identical numbers noted for Fresno. Bestplaces also notes the USA average crime rate is 4 and 4 in these categories, meaning the higher the number the worse the crime rate is. As another example under the Health criterion, on a scale from 1 to 100 is indicated the air quality index for given cities, 1 being the worst and 100 the best. The US average AQI is 82.8. It turns out that Fresno has a rating of 1 compared to 2.2 which Visalia received. So I don't know what that long commute is getting you.

Gotta call BS on this post. The picture posted is not typical traffic. This is a picture of an hurricane evacuation. Notice all lanes of the freeway going in the same direction. That said, I lived in Houston a long time before I figured out that there were many places to live that were more appealing. Just pick any city to the north, east or west. Never looked back.

But there's always a hurricane in the Gulf, or one coming, or one that's just left.

Houston probably isn't for everyone but it's a decent city. There are positives for living in Texas for someone wanting to be an ALJ. There is no state income tax, you can buy a house at a great price, business is thriving, and the weather (although it gets hot in the summer) is pretty good. Plus with DFW and Bush Int'l it's easy to travel nationally & internationally from either Dallas or Houstons offices. If you lived that close to the Bissonnet office I can understand why you hate Houston. That'd be an awful area to live. It's too bad Austin doesn't have an ODAR.

Thanks for the numbers! As others have said, not completely up-to-date but still very useful. I've heard rumors of transfers being approved in my office, so maybe they are shuffling now in hopes of a quick hire as soon as the budget is approved.

If transfers are being approved, this is a HUGE happening! That means they will hire soon. They don't approve transfers unless there is hiring movement. This is the most important posting in a long time.

Thanks sta, I found some really fun statistics to obsess over while I wait for my NOR score. Here's something I found while on that website: The places most at risk from natural disasters 1. Dallas-Plano-Irving, TX 2. Jonesboro, AR 3. Corpus Christi, TX 4. Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown, TX 5. Beaumont-Port Arthur, TX 6. Shreveport-Bossier City, LA 7. Austin-Round Rock, TX 8. Birmingham-Hoover, AL 9. Fort Worth-Arlington, TX 10. Fort Walton Beach-Crestview-Destin, FL Funny, but 6 of the top 10 metro areas are in TX. Just sayin'

They don't approve transfers unless there is hiring movement. Transfers happen all the time, but lots of transfers at one time is prolly a good sign.

So this would be the last, last last gasp for the current register? that would be my guess super. otherwise, the NOR would need to come out right away, certifications would have to be pulled for each of the GAL offices, interviews would have to be conducted, and selections made if they keep to the January hire time-frame. I don't see that happening, especially for a "small hire."

No one in my office has heard anything about the list being worked.
Also checked with friends and colleagues in 3 other offices and they have heard nothing either.
I suspect any transfers at present are merely biz as usual and don't signal any imminent hiring.
Wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong. But, if they plan even a small hire in january (from either the old or new register) it goes against the reports of judge Bice's recent comments and it must be the best kept secret in odar.

Hurricanes says seem to come right up between the two.

Funkster, I concur, no news on the battlefront of any new hires or transfers, other than those getting out of Augusta, at this time.

Many thanks to SSAER for posting the redacted transfer list, and to those who have provided analysis.
I've taken (and posted) a c'est la vie attitude about securing this job, but I have to admit to now being a bit encouraged that my limited GAL is crapland to many -- for my cities, the "wanna get outs" outnumber the "lemme ins." We'll see. And truly, good luck to all.
