When I checked in at the hotel, I asked how long the desk clerk estimated I needed to allow for the next morning's cab ride. Then I added a ridiculous amount of time for a cushion. The last thing I wanted to do was test how serious OPM was when it said:
"No Late Admissions. No Exceptions."

I stayed at the Marriott on 20th and E street, across the street from OPM. It was very good. I walked to the embassy suites for the SI, a pleasant stroll through foggy bottom and Georgetown . Whole foods is at 22nd and I street. The metro has been very bad lately, almost a derailment a day.

Follow saaao's advice. My interview was two years ago. What worked then may not work now.

Just got my email a half hour ago. I was "not in the higher scored sub-group of eligible applicants" after the online component. I did appeal, with as many reasons I could think of to challenge the results. Notice said my appeal was cancelled, and I would be given be details later as to scheduling the WD, LBMT, and SI.
Spoke to one other person I knew in the office who hadn't passed the OC, and *didn't* appeal, and was told nothing received.
At the very least, these notices are being staggered, as it appears that others have been receiving them for sometime.
So happy.

In another thread, we've got reports from: 1) someone who appealed and was told their appeal was rejected AND their score is not high enough to go to DC this time as well; 2) someone whose appeal was rejected BUT whose score is high enough to go to DC this time; and 3) Funky reporting on someone who did not appeal and was informed their score is high enough to go to DC this time.

I stayed at the SI hotel - did a timed, dry run on foot to OPM the day before - walked both ways for the LBMT and WD - got there about 20 minutes early - there were already well over a dozen folks there.
Inclement weather plan would have been to take a cab, but was not needed.

I stayed at the state plaza both nights. On SI day, I walked over to the hotel. About halfway there a downpour hit and no cabs. Luckily the hand dryers at the SI hotel mens room worked well. Take an umbrella just in case.

And if there happens to be an active shooter at the Navy Yard, in the middle of a government shutdown - just drive on.

I have yet another opportunity to demonstrate my ignorance.
I understand the SI is conducted by OPM. However, is there a point where SSA/ODAR also interviews? Some have talked about SSA's "liking" certain candidates so I'm wondering if that's based on the NOR, or other factors?

If you successfully navigate OPM's testing and land on the Register, and then make one or more SSA cert(s), SSA will interview you. Your score (often incorrectly by me and others called your NOR) and GAL are what get you on a cert. All reports by those in a better position than I to know are that once they can reach you SSA does not care about your score. SSA does care how you did on your interview with SSA.

Like Gary said, and keep in mind that although SSA is the biggest customer of the register hiring the most ALJs, once you make a cert with any other agency who requests a list of qualified individuals you interview with them as well. Keep in mind the register is one big list of generic ALJ candidates who are open to be hired by any agency. Then you have to make a certificate (cert) for a specific agency to move on in the process with that specific agency. MOST of the discussion in these threads are about SSA since they do most of the hiring, but different agencies (SEC, Labor, OMHA, and more) have slightly different processes once you get through their individual gauntlets. For instance, SSA only does a preliminary background investigation prior to hire and a big one after... unlike OMHA who does their background prior to offer.

Since I (at least currently) have a very limited GAL, and I'm fairly sure SSA is the only game in town in those cities, I'm not likely to wind up on a cert for any of the other agencies, unless I'm missing something. Rattling on, forgive me for probing a bit further. I realize all of this presumes a lot, but maybe like a few others on here I'm interested in as much knowledge about this whole process as I can get. I assume the agency interview, if it comes to pass, means another trip to DC? Will that also typically be on my own nickel? Also, hypothetically let's assume I get a job with OMHA - however, I want to transfer "home" which means SSA. Am I able to put myself on a transfer list that would take me to an new agency? Or how would that work? Thanks for your patience. I fear I'm proving the old adage, "There's no such thing as a stupid question," to be incorrect.

If you make a cert and are interviewed by the agency, the agency will pay your travel. However, you will only receive an interview the first time you hit a cert. future certs will be determined based on the original agency interview.
