I applied for an Immigration Judgeship in the Fall of 2014. Was just notified that I have been selected. By the date I report for duty, nearly two years would have elapsed. A process not for the faint hearted. Congratulations, and thanks for summarizing your timeline. None of this is speedy. This generally weeds out people who are just between jobs.

This is an excellent opportunity for a sitting ALJ to make a difference.

I'm not worried, but just in case will make max contributions to both parties' candidates. Not.

Just wondering whether it would be worth applying for someone like me (with no immigration experience).

I'm not worried, but just in case will make max contributions to both parties' candidates. Not. No joke. I doubt we'll get a President Trump, but if we do it will result in part from anti-immigrant feeling. So I could definitely see him throwing out the current hiring process and looking for "tough" candidates. Bush 43 did it.

I have a friend that was recently appointed as an IJ, and his background was in immigration law. I heard that it's difficult to get an IJ position without immigration experience, but EOIR will consider judicial experience to overcome a lack of immigration experience. I hope that helps.

Has anyone heard rumblings of 2d interviews being scheduled for the 2015 applicants? If so, what regions if you know.

I applied in Nov. 2015 with a first interview in April 2016. I received word that my immediate supervisor was contacted last week. No news on a 2nd interview however.

That's great news, breen68. From what I have heard, they do not contact your references unless they are preparing to give a second interview. I had heard that first-round interviews for the Nov 2015 ad would be ongoing thru July. They definitely are focusing on people with very strong immigration backgrounds, but some people with strong judicial or litigation backgrounds have also been selected. I have been at it since February, and it is interesting but very challenging (somewhat of a throw you right in, provide you with little in the way of resources, and you sink or swim). The people are great and it is a wonderful change of pace. I wish you the best of luck going forward!

Congratulations breen68! Would you mind sharing what region of the country you applied for IJ consideration?

I got a call asked asking for some additional contact info for my prior superiors. I've had first rounds interviews for the 2014 and 2015 postings. I assume this is good news (likely second round???). I have heard that if you get a second round interview, your chances are fairly good. Any anecdotes out there about those not surviving a second round interview?

The IJ hiring process is not as clear as: interview; references called; second interview; hired. I applied on the 2014 application, interviewed in July 2015 and my references were called shortly thereafter. I then reapplied on the 2015 application and interviewed in March 2016. I was informed that both applications tracks remain pending, albeit, separately from each other. EOIR continues first round interviews on the 2015 applications.

www.justice.gov/eoir/pr/eoir-swears-15-immigration-judgesOf the 15 new judges, 14 had ICE experience and one was an AUSA. I do think this underlines the complexities of immigration law and the desire of EOIR to hire judges that will immediately be able to effectively handle a very high caseload. More second interviews are scheduled next month for future classes.

By 2d interview, do you mean those who applied for Nov 2014 class or 2015? Thanks
