By 2d interview, do you mean those who applied for Nov 2014 class or 2015? Thanks I'm uncertain if they still have plans to interview any 2014 applicants. The ones that I know are progressing all applied in 2015.

Forgive my being dense, but a few of the posts indicated that you apply for the IJ position, others said that DOJ gets a raft of applicants from OPM who've been through the ALJ position to cert and then reviews those to see who might be someone they'd want to interview.
Do you apply separately for IJ? If so are there other agencies where you apply separately?

Do you apply separately for IJ? If so are there other agencies where you apply separately? It's completely separate as its not classified as an ALJ position. There are other positions that are AJs (administrative judges) which are also separate. Past threats discussed the differences between ALJ and AJ and we are not doing that on this thread. You may search for those discussions to learn more.

Do you apply separately for IJ? If so are there other agencies where you apply separately? Yes, IJ is a separate application from ALJ. The only overlap is immaterial: OPM, which creates the ALJ register, also helps Justice sift through IJ applications. Yes, there are other agencies that have judicial positions where you apply separately. Too many to name. Board of Veterans Appeals is one that comes to mind. But it's always been my understanding that you have very little chance of getting those unless you are an insider at the agency, or have a connection at the agency, or at the very least have impressive expertise in the agency's subject matter.

Jafo, thanks for posting the info about the new judges.
And if you're saying that you got a second interview ... well done!

Robespierre-- Thanks for the informative response. In applying for ILJ do you wait for an announcement via US Jobs? Haven't seen any recently. Once you apply, is there a system like OPM's for the ALJ positions with application resume etc followed by an online screen followed by in person?
You mentioned that there were other non-ALJ agency Judge positions. Where would you find the list? Or just put in "judge" under US Jobs?
Thanks!

You mentioned that there were other non-ALJ agency Judge positions. Where would you find the list? Or just put in "judge" under US Jobs? Thanks! Para. 1 - Yes, you wait for a USA Jobs announcement (and watch this forum). There was a job announcement in Aug. 2014 and another in Nov. 2015, and they clearly still need judges, so there might be another one before too long. Para. 2 - It's very different from the ALJ process. No exams (online or in-person). You submit a form, a resume, reference letters, and "quality factor" statements that are basically essays. Then you wait to be interviewed. Para. 3 - I don't know of a list. Even if there is one, it doesn't matter because the only relevant jobs are ones for which they're hiring. And as Minny said, those are advertised on USA Jobs. So yes, put a standing search for "judge" into USA Jobs. Good luck.

Hello Everyone, I applied only in the Nov 2015 group, not the 2014. I had my initial interview in May of 2016. I have not heard anything since that time, but I have a lot of information about the process. I.E. the announced for every city that has an immigration court and received over 8k applications. For this round, they are interviewing several hundred people for positions all over. I applied in Texas, California, Colorado and Florida. I will update the board when and if I ever hear more or receive another interview. Breen, have you scheduled your second interview yet?

I applied to the 2015 announcement and my status on USA Jobs indicates I was referred for an interview. Other than that, crickets. Do you think it's safe to say that I'm out of the running?

Were you contacted for an interview? Or just referred to the hiring official? The contact for the interview is a phone call from the EOIR office. Unfortunately, if you haven't been contacted by phone for an in person interview then I'd say you are out of luck for this round. How much immigration experience do you have? If you look at the recent appointments there is a trend. They are looking for people with a lot of immigration experience who can handle a heavy docket right away.

Just referred by a hiring official, not contacted. Limited immigration experience. Sounds like it may not happen this go 'round. We'll see.

Hello everyone. I am new to this post today. I applied for the first time in Nov 2015 for 7 cities. None of the new hires have been appointed to any of those cities, except Denver (but hey, I think everyone applied for Denver). I went for an interview in April 2016 and was told I would hear something in 2 months by ACIJ. I believe that was a bit optimistic. I was also told I would hear either way whether I would be called for a second interview. My question is whether any members have actually been called to be told they did not get the job or whether I can expect I need to watch new hires in the cities I applied for to track progress. Thanks.

I would say that's a pretty safe bet. If IJ is your end goal I would try to get an ACC spot in one of the ICE/OPLA offices. Their numbers are based on the number of IJs so there will be more ACCs hired in the near term. If you look at EIOR's website 14/15 IJs recently selected had that experience.

Thanks. I would not put much stock in any timeline they gave you. They are wildly inconsistent in their level of communication. Keep in mind that once the you have your interview with the ACIJs your package goes to Main Justice for review. I know individuals who waited nearly a year before they were informed that they were not selected. I know individuals who were never informed of anything and I know people who waited 16 months before they were called for a second interview! There is little rhyme or reason to the process and it seems unpredictable. I am in same spot you are, i interviewed in May, and have not heard anything yet. What cities did you apply for? Do you have a lot of immigration experience? I applied for Denver, San Diego, Houston and Orlando.

I know how true that is and might have to consider it. I think the private bar would like to see EOIR broaden their horizons - to outsiders with commensurate immigration experience.

The problem is that there are very few qualified members of the private bar who would be willing to give up their practice to take the bench.

I applied for Omaha (yes I did), Seattle, Honolulu, Portland, Tacoma, Charlotte, and Denver. The waiting is so difficult. I try to put it out of my mind. I have 12 years full time immigration law experience.
