I applied to the December posting and interviewed in January. Any idea if I am ineligible given these were so recent?

“The agency is still considering referred applicants from the previous announcements posted September 25, 2023, under announcement number, IJ-12116877-23-VG, and December 1, 2023, under announcement number, DE-12215980-23-VG. If you applied under these announcements and were referred for consideration, you need not reapply under this announcement”.
That is from the current listing. Sounds like those recently applying/interviewed are still in consideration.

At first, I did not see the statement at the top of the job post about the previous applicants not needing to reapply. Was it always there? I guess it does not prohibit reapplication. I don't know if it would be frowned on though.

Interesting, the most recent opening states :"High risk"
(which is defined as : A high risk position is likely to produce a substantial or even inestimable amount of harm or serious damage to the public's trust ).
For location, it says "negotiable after selection."

That ALJ listing for DOI just posted says “high risk” also, as does the listing for OPLA. (I still highly recommend trying for OPLA as a way to play the long game and get good experience if you want to be an IJ).

How realistic are these positions for outside hires (non-AUSA, non-OPLA attorneys)? I meet the litigation experience requirements and have several years of immigration-specific experience in the nonprofit sector.

Look back at the bios of recent hires. I think it is very realistic.

They are actively trying to diversify the bench, and that’s reflected in the IJ classes we’ve seen in the past couple of years. Strike while the iron is hot.

The need for people and competition at the locations you listed will more likely be the true wildcard.

After applying to the April 2024 IJ posting, I received an email yesterday saying I've been referred to the hiring manager, so hopefully an interview soon. Since I went through first and second round interviews in Nov and Dec 2023 based on the Sept 2023 posting, and it's been under 12 months, maybe this will be straight to second interview? Who knows.

I thnk if you interviewed in October, your interviews are still good, right? It said you “need not reapply,” I think? Anyway, if they do reinterview, you likely would go to the second interview directly. If past practice is precedent, that is. That happened to me in 2022 and 2023. The second go-around, I went right to the second interview. Didn’t get an offer, but I did not repeat the first interview.

I've also been referred, but in my experience with federal employment, a lot of candidates get "referred," so I'm not getting my hopes up.

It’s still a necessary step, but you’re right, it doesn’t really impact a decision to interview. Good luck.

The email also says "You have been referred to the hiring manager for position IJ-0905-00 in Location Negotiable After Selection, United States." I only checked "any location" when I applied. Does that mean the hiring manager forwarded my application to all offices with vacancies?

The hiring process is centralized, as far as I know, so it all should go to the same place regardless of where you indicated availability.
