Sad news in the Trek universe with the sudden (and quite honestly, horrific) death of Anton Yelchin (new Chekov in JJ Abrams' re-boot). (suddenly, I realize I've become my mother: "Do you remember so-and-so?" "No." "Oh. Well, he/she died.") So sad. Promising young actor and seemed like decent kid to boot

Yes, his death in those circumstances is so surreal, it's hard to wrap your mind around it.

I'm pretty sure Dayton Ward wrote a ST novel that explained the virus and surrounding events that changed the Klingons' appearance. Allegedly, a colony remained untouched, all the better to spy on the Federation.
What bothers me is the flip between Romulan and Klingon cultures. In classic trek, the Romulans were honorable warriors, while the Klingons fought dirty. In TNG, the Romulans are despicable and the Klingons are the honorable warriors. I never have encountered an explanation for that flip.

J Mmm, I think the destruction of Praxis (as seen in Star Trek VI) and the battle at Khitomer were the proximate reasons that showed that the Feds were also honorable warriors and led to them being treated as such. I also like to think that the TOS view of Klingons was a bit suspicious, but Koloth was shown as an honorable commander, both on TOS and DS9.

First time I ever saw the acronym LOL, I thought we were talking about Data's daughter. I was so confused!
For context, TNG was still in its first run when this happened.
When Data was asked why he named her that, "Because Lol means love"

Yes, his death in those circumstances is so surreal, it's hard to wrap your mind around it. Judgymcjudgypants BTW, latest news reports are that his car, a 2015 Grand Cherokee, was under a recall notice for problems with the gear shift lever - it always returns to center, requiring the driver to make sure visually that the vehicle is in park. This is the first reported fatality related to the recall, and to date, Fiat/Chrysler doesn't yet have a fix for it. They simply told owners to use the parking brake. (for those that don't know, he parked his car on his "steep" driveway and went to the mailbox, but his Jeep rolled backward and pinned him against a concrete wall attached to the gate in his driveway, killing him. Horrible) There may be litigation in the near future.

For the same reason, do not bring a stick shift car to the Bay Area!

For the same reason, do not bring a stick shift car to the Bay Area! true, was a foolish move on his part but still tragic. i thought soon after he heard, he must not have used parking brake on a hill, had he used it, he might still be here. Car should have not had defect so that is big issue too. but we have parking breaks for a reason.

Car should have not had defect so that is big issue too. but we have parking breaks for a reason. I don't blame the guy. He had every right to believe the car would hold. This is a basic safety issue for Fiat-Chrysler. Very serious. It is reasonable and forseeable that lots of drivers of an automatic will not apply the parking brake. Also, if a steep enough hill, a parking brake may have been insufficient to hold and keep a car in neutral from rolling down. One time in Raleigh, I left my car (VW Jetta with stick) at the top of my driveway at street level because of a snowstorm. My driveway was too steep to get up sometimes in ice or snow. The car had the gearshift in 1st and the parking brake was on. The blizzard came and the next morning, the car was simply gone! I assumed it had been stolen. Then I saw that overnight, it had somehow slid backwards down the driveway and was on my neighbor's snow-covered lawn a foot from his house! The shift was still in 1st, and the parking brake tight.

I thought there was recall on his model for something that led to car rolling down hill. thx for real life example on how well parking brakes work, was that in 2001 by any chance? i remember there being a lot of ice in NC around that time.

christina: In January, 2000, we had 22" of snow in Raleigh--all time record. That may have been when my car slid, but I'm not sure. Federal courts and offices were closed for two weeks. It almost never got above freezing for two weeks. Worst winter in my 28 years in the Carolinas. They didn't allow telework, but that's what we did. I walked to Food Lion with a sled to get groceries.
