christina : In January, 2000, we had 22" of snow in Raleigh--all time record. That may have been when my car slid, but I'm not sure. Federal courts and offices were closed for two weeks. It almost never got above freezing for two weeks. Worst winter in my 28 years in the Carolinas. They didn't allow telework, but that's what we did. I walked to Food Lion with a sled to get groceries. Got it, i am thinking a little later than. i think it was jan 2001 or 2002 when a relative of mine got stuck in a snow/ice storm in northern NC. She took job and as much as she did not care for the ice, i think it was a hurricane that really made her want to leave, i think it was only a cat-2 and she was a bit inland. And she's thinking if it's this bad for a cat-2. well. we'll end her thoughts there!!!

I have had a mechanic tell me that parking brakes are primarily designed to stop forward motion, not backward motion, so another reason not take anything for granted. He gave me a technical explanation but I didn't retain it, just the moral of the story.

For all of the Trekkies on the board, if you happen to be in the NYC area this summer, make sure you check out the Starfleet Academy Experience at the Intrepid Museum in NYC Harbor (Pier 86) Star Trek: The Starfleet Academy Experience

In celebration of the end of Phase 2, here is the correct answer to my S/J/T test scenario:
Most likely--why are there Klingons in the parking lot?
Least likely--I really prefer the classic Trek Klingons to the TNG Klingons.
Back story: I was at work one day and looked out the front window. Lo, and behold, there WERE 5 TNG Klingons walking across the parking lot. It was a touch surreal so my first thought was: why are there Klingons in the parking lot? Followed by: there must be a Trek convention at the hotel next door and WHY didn’t I know about it?

Sorry, but just the facts ma'am (apologies for the tm infringement!). Actually, Picard rules!!! [running off hysterically].

As a series I prefer TNG but TOS had better movies.

My allegiance will always be to classic Trek.
Trek never recaptured the lightening in the bottle that was the Kirk/Spock/McCoy triad.
Also, Kirk was way hotter than Picard.

I agree. I could never get into TNG. I wish I looked like Kirk did then, not like Mr. Priceline does now! Original Trek broke ground in so many ways. I must admit, though, that the new JJ Abrams Star Trek movies do get a lot of that lightning!

Well, the first reboot did, but the second, not so much. I have major issues with the casting of Kahn. The choice was just so terribly, terribly wrong. Add to that--Trek never really works when they go dark with it. Roddenberry explored dark themes but there was always optimism, express or implied, at the end of the journey.

TOS was sometimes sublime (Amok Time; City on the Edge of Forever), sometimes ridiculous (Spock's Brain; Eden), but mostly excellent. I agree with jagvet that TOS was groundbreaking in many, many ways, and with JMcJP that the original trio was inimitable, and that the Roddenberry universe is fundamentally optimistic. The good guys always win in the end. E pleb nista prevails. If I want darkness, there's always Dickens, or the news.

Yes. ST TOS was a show of American optimism projected into the future. The civil rights issues, conflicts about technology and ethics, personal integrity, leadership, loyalty and relationships always ended with a hope-filled future. At a time (the 60's) when everything was being questioned, ST always answered those questions with hope. I guess that the 2d Abrams movie was not as much on message as the first. This is why (to digress) Galaxy Quest succeeded as a parody. It also had a hopeful, optimistic theme that even vain, mediocre, shallow actors could marshal their courage and resources to really become the heroes they portrayed.

It also had a hopeful, optimistic theme that even vain, mediocre, shallow actors could marshal their courage and resources to really become the heroes they portrayed. That's probably why I've always thought of Galaxy Quest as more of an homage with gentle teasing to the series and fandom than "just" a parody. It's more a celebration than making fun of, although there is humor to the over-dedication of some fans.

I believe Gene Roddenberry would have loved Galaxy Quest. It was funny and irreverent but it truly believed in the positive outlook for the future.
It was also one the best roles Alan Rickman ever played.

I believe Gary just volunteered to buy us all drinks. Heresy comes at a cost. So, food court at the mall an hour before showtime? J
