Can anyone share plans for the government shutdown? Curious what people are hearing, if anything.

So far it has been radio silence. I will show up if they want me to show up, or stay home if they tell me to. I feel pretty zen about it either way. I don't anticipate hearing anything until a shutdown actually happens.

Can anyone share plans for the government shutdown? Curious what people are hearing, if anything. This has become so common we just no longer have any concerns. Last I heard is that they are going to go for another CR yet again

I was told to cancel flights in the week following the 19th and that while usually managers are like - no worries it won't happen - that this time they feel like it is possible - so we got the whole - if there is a shut down - report on Monday for shutdown fun and games - all 4 hours of it. All I can say is if there is a shut down - let it please be long enough that we have an excuse/reason to ask for extensions - new hearings dates because otherwise all this does is mess with my life.

Here is a link to the contingency plan: www.ssa.gov/agency/shutdown/materials/contingency-plan.pdf Basically under the plan in effect, most of the Hearing Office is considered essential and business continues almost like normal, so hearings continue, decisions still get written, and cases continue to be scheduled. Appeals Council on the other hand doesn't seem to be essential.

Last time there was a shut down ALJ's were considered "essential" and kept working and holding hearings as scheduled. I haven't heard anything at all from local management on the subject, but I would anticipate that ALJ's again will keep working if there is a shutdown. Given the backlog, the whole hearing operation might get on the essential list this time. The bright side of that is that essential employees are obligated to be paid when the shut down ends. Traditionally furloughed employees have gotten paid as well, but we are living in pretty non-traditional times these days so if there is a shutdown there might not be a "paid vacation" for furloughed employees this time.
Looks like I was beaten by a few seconds.

When we shut down in 2013, some of us were deemed non-essential until we weren't. At that point, many people had to go into the office but could not effectuate Decisions by mailing or any other method. So a lot of these stupid games that politicians wage make absolutely no difference even if they are deemed non-essential

The word I received from a Congressperson for whom I've done some work was that it's going to be a two month extension. Now this was as of 10 days ago and people even on the Hill seem to get into position taking though I rather think that with all the principals looking to the lifeboats that there may be a united spirit of "let's not try to look like total jerks." I'm not hearing that anyone other than anti-government ideologues has any desire for a shut down. But what do I know. This is the level of civitas so anything is possible: www.nytimes.com/2018/01/16/us/politics/government-shutdown-immigration-childrens-health.html?_r=0

I had read it would be another short term CR, like a couple of weeks. Definitely not thrilled with this dragging out that far. For many reasons.

I too heard that a short term CR had been proposed. I heard that it was a one month CR.I am really sick of short term CRs. I don't understand how things are going to change in 30 days. We really need a budget.

I took on a major financial obligation last month, so I predict a shutdown will happen. I was honestly a bit shocked it didn’t happen in December. But my luck is bound to run out one of these days.

Don't worry, if the past is any predictor of the future, you will be paid.

Last time I was paid but not on time, which was stressful. A shutdown now would be less painful because I have a much healthier savings account.
But I know a lot of people who are GS-9s or GS-11s and are the primary breadwinners in their families in high cost of living areas. I really feel for those people. A one- or two-week delay may not be a big deal to a lot of us, but it is a BFD to many people.

Let me note that primaries for Congressional seats will be happening in 4 months. That means those that aren't retiring are calibrating how their voters will feel if they are part of the "Freedom(sic)caucus" or other group that thinks a shutdown is dandy. They may have second thoughts. Third thoughts. 4 months isn't so long voters will forget. They're visualizing the ad campaigns against them.
They may move slowly, imperceptibly to a vote change. Only takes a few at this point. It's how they spell relief.

It looks like the House is voting on another CR today at 2:30 EST. I'm not going to get optimistic though. On the bright side, if the government does shut down, I get out of a Monday morning staff meeting (what kind of cruel person does that?!)

Now the vote is tentatively this evening (updated so I don't look like a misinformed liar).

No e-mail received yet. Does anyone recall whether you can telework during a shutdown?
I'm suspecting that we would be required to show up in the office, but I can't recall what happened last time round.
