Just saw this on USAJobs: Appellate Immigration JudgeThe announcement lists 36 locations in different cities. But the DOJ website says that the Board of Immigration Appeals is located in Falls Church, VA. Does anyone know any more about this? Are they putting appellate panels in regional offices now? Or looking for appeals judges to work remotely? Also, any insight on what the job is like, and what they're looking for?

Do they prefer to hire current IJs for this position?

“It’s difficult to conceive why someone who does not make management decisions needs to be appointed by the head of an agency."
Fixed it.

The BIA currently has 20 permanent members and it is authorized to staff up to 21 members. There are four additional EOIR employees serving as temporary board members so that raises the current number of active members to 24. The vacancy announcement is a bit puzzling because BIA members sit in Falls Church and the only time they travel is when there is a need for them to serve as IJs around the country. Also, DOJ has not made any announcements about permanently increasing the number of BIA members going forward. Three things caught my attention in the vacancy announcement. First, the number of cities. Given that the BIA does not permanently post people around the country that, in itself, is very telling. Second, the announcement states that the position requires travel up to 50 percent of the time. Third, it discloses that "the incumbent is also qualified to conduct and may be assigned to conduct proceedings in the first instance as an immigration judge." Given the difficulities that EOIR has faced over the past two years in recruiting and retaining IJs, my reading of the vacancy announcement is that, if they hire pursant to the terms of the announcement, those new hires will end up mostly on the road and serving as IJs irrespective of the title they are assigned at the time of hiring. For those of you who are going to apply . . . ask A LOT of questions during the application and interview process so that you know what you would be getting into if the job is offered to you and you were to accept.

Currently, not all BIA members work out of Falls Church. Also, the job announcement does not say that travel is required (Travel Required is a subject heading) but that you may be expected to do some traveling. The new hires will not be on the road working as roving IJs but will be doing BIA work in their assigned cities.

Makes me wonder why the vacancy announcement fails to explain those very important details. Perhaps TPTB in Falls Church will nudge the human resources officer who posted the announcement to revise it accordingly.

Other than not explicitly saying that there are BIA members presently working outside of FC, everything else is in the announcement. A list of 30+ cities including Falls Church are listed as possible vacancies and it adds there may be some traveling and the possibility that you may have to sit as an IJ is clearly stated.
Just because there are over 30 cities listed doesn't mean there are over 30 vacancies. For the small handful of vacancies the successful applicants will probably get to pick their duty location or EOIR will select the best applicant who has applied for a location that they want to fill with a BIA member.

It is interesting to consider whether to apply to a single city, a few cities, or many cities, in order to maximize one's chance of success.
(I am a lifelong renter, geographically flexible, and like to travel, as does my spouse.)
In March 2019 I applied for the BIA solely in the city where I currently live, and did not get an interview.

Hi All,
I am brand new to this forum. I was referred this week for the most recent Appellate Immigration Judge posting (January 2020 posting). The next step is the interview, if selected obviously. So my question is how long does it take to get an invite for an interview for the appellate IJ gig?
Thank you.

I didn’t receive a referral email but the status on USAJobs shows up as referred. Hoping that means a referral but who knows?

Hi leverager,
Same thing happened to me in which I did not receive a referral e-mail. However, if you go to your application status and click on "Additional Application Information", it will take you to your actual submitted application for the position and if you scroll to the bottom, you will see the "Notifications" section and see the actual Notice of Referral. Hope that helps.

The referral letter was in my account efeldma. Thanks for that info. Hopefully others who think they weren't referred finds that little gem in their accounts as well.

Thanks! Mine showed referral, said two mailings were sent--on the same day . Go figure!
So once anyone hears about interviews let us know or pm me.
By the way, this brings up a good point--for IJ, if you didn't get referred and others are saying they did, no harm in checking--or for interviews.
