AI is promising but coming up short as it is now. I just completed training on AI that summarizes medical evidence. The software turned a 1500 page file into 6000 pages. There was a very small portion of the summary that was helpful. It was not able to read handwriting, well, MSSs are often handwritten and very important and not even mentioned in the summary. This is the best AI for medical summaries on the market at this time. The cost benefit analysis was a clear no for me. A medical records summary is the only viable thing I can see AI doing for us in the future, and from the sound of it, that technology may still be way off. A summary would be helpful for case reviews and decision writing, but I think attorneys will be needed to bridge the gap between records and the findings of fact. AI seems to fall short on reliable, detailed analysis. Even if the technology was there, I don't think AI will replace human ALJs as fact finders. I think (hope) there is at least a human element to consider soft factors, even if AI decision making is used at other levels of the disability process. My dream would be that fewer decision writers are needed bc of AI, and we skew towards more ALJs. Use the technology to process cases faster and get a decision sooner. As a decision writer, I think you are correct, assuming the AI technology can get there. The Agency (sensibly) wants formulaic and uniform decisions pushed out as quickly as possible, perfect for AI. As it stands, decisions contain a great deal of boilerplate language located within pre-configured templates, so we're already halfway there.

I think the easiest progression is DDS summarizes records already, just tie summaries to exhibit numbers and summarize later submitted records. With that AI could write acceptable favorable decisions with instructions that reference exhibit numbers and clearly identify impairments. That being followed by AI summaries of exhibits. Once AI can effectively read medical writing less than fully favorable decisions is in reach with instructions not much more detailed than currently sought. If you can get to the point of telling the AI it’s a later onset and it can suggest potential onset dates based on the severe impairments and the RFC and not just because of age change you are starting to get close to decision making. Crafting an RFC based on records and testimony taking into account how testimony and records align or fail to is something I can’t fathom being in reach in a decade

Recently promoted attorney here. 12+ years of agency experience. I'm out as soon as I graduate with my master's in an unrelated field and find a job. After three attempts at the ALJ job and only one interview, it's not happening for me. I don't even really want it anymore. I've found something far more personally rewarding. Please share, a masters in what and where are you going?

I suspect most people want to quit their jobs on a regular basis for one reason or another. I have often wondered what percentage of attorneys wake up excited about their work day. I would love to find that but I have no idea what that job would even look like for me. For AAs looking for higher pay OGC does hire AAs. If you applied and don’t end up getting an offer, keep your eye out for any detail opportunities. I know of multiple AAs hired after doing a detail. Though fair warning morale is not that high right now within OGC either for various reasons, one of them being high stress due to large workloads. However, GS-14 is easily attainable in a relatively short period of time. GS-15 is possible but not easy to come by. Explain to us why GK got demoted.

Super excited to help people one on one!

Why not do both? The agency is generous with approving outside activities.

The latest has been to consider a data science bootcamp...sigh...

Today AC said there was no discussion of the claimant's symptoms. Each alleged impairment was discussed along with medical findings, test results, and the complaints and symptoms alleged. Give me a don't like how you handled opinion evidence so it's not so blatantly a case of we just need to send one back or just in a snit and want to send one back. Don't insult me with the didn't discuss symptoms when you couldn't conclude that if you read the decision.
Job is really really really starting to suck. Time to contemplate exit strategies. I'm nearly debt free and can afford to shift to something less head pounding against the wall.
Wish it had happened three months ago, I would have applied for the NCAA compliance position that was open.

Regardless though, I'm sick of the idiocies the agency engages in. I swear they hate attorneys and hate excepted service. We could take over the agency if OHO didn't let non-attorneys become GS and HODs, let them into ROs and HQ offices. OHO should be entirely attorney led.

The Agency seems to really loathe attorneys and to promote people into management positions who feel the same. Then, they wrong their hands about morale...it is very disheartening.

It’s why I DGAF about getting remands anymore.
