I may be wrong, exjag, but I believe you would have had to already indicate you are fluent in Spanish in your app to be considered for the position. I also want to say that you would be given a separate interview in Spanish if you want to be considered for PR, but someone else can correct me on that because I may be confusing it with another job.

I would think Puerto Rico would be a popular selection but you must be fluent in the language because spanish is the language of the hearing. I am a bit rusty on the language but could come back to very fluent with a little immersion (read a couple of books, watch some Novelas and practice with Rosetta Stone. Hesitant however because the cost of living seems to be high, the crime appears to be rampant in San Juan and I fear that I would get stuck there for years if I were selected. I would rather take a Memphis, Toledo or Tupelo where I can drive a few hours and be back in civilization.
I like the way you think exjag.
Thanks MPD, hopefully you and I will not be arm wresting for Tupelo!

No, you are right hopefalj. I did certify that I was fluent in Spanish in my initial application (and listed the three PR locations on my GAL). My understanding is that PR gets a separate certificate because of the language requirement(I read on this and and old board). The OIG report that has been posted here indicated that San Juan ODAR (SSA actually) asked for a cert of bilinugal candidates last year and there were no other bilingual candidates left on the current register. Go figure! I do not think SSA has done "Spanish only" interviews in recent years. They have been conducting "bilingual interviews" and you do have to show speaking, writing and reading proficiency in Spanish. After the Spanglish interview you are taken to a separate room where you have to read and write answers to questions in Spanish. I am a little rusty but can shake the rust off with a little immersion/study.

No Tupelo arm wrestling with you, but perhaps with another someone I know from this Board.

Well, heck, I have almost every city on my list minus some popular places like CA FL and NY. I am pretty much a wide open just please please please give me an ALJ job kind-a-gal. LOL!

Sratty, I won't arm-wrestle you for Tupelo because I love your dogs and you know what a softy I am for dogs. If it was a fight for Tupelo between us, then I wouldn't fight you for it, I would want you to have it. Then again, I probably wouldn't make that offer to anyone else. However, I am sure we know someone who might fight you for it! LOL!

With that said, Tupelo is not my home town, but it is warmer than most places. And yes, I DO know someone who would wrestle me for Tupelo! For SURE! GRIN.....

About a week before I got the call for an interview with SSA the Medicare hearing office. I was informed the hearing would be held in Spanish. The following week SSA called and scheduled my interview and about two days later Medicare called and canceled my interview; I was a little disappointed that I did not get the chance to see if my Spanish is as good as I think it is. My point is that OMHA holds their interviews in Spanish.

I speak Spanish, and was going to have my interview in Spanish, but my wife decided that she did not want to move from the Pacific NW, and away from family, to live in PR, so I removed the PR ODARs from my GAL - which otherwise was wide open - and requested my interview with the Agency be done in English, instead, which they complied with.

I only have DC and Miami on my GAL though.

That is my biggest impediment, wife does not want to move there. I had a nice GS-13 gig offer with the Army at Fort Buchanan back in 2006 and she put her foot down and did not want to move. I am going to visit San Juan with her before the end of the year and scout out the real estate and the surrounding areas just in case I make the register and the PR cert.

Is Medicare DC or Alexandria? Same thing for many of us. Northern VA is DC for an out of town person like me. But I think you had to choose Alexandria on the GAL
