I sent all my paper work in response to the cert email on Tuesday before the Friday deadline. So, I'm probably just at the top of the heap that they are going through.

I don't remember if the timing on reference checks correlated with the timing on paperwork return for my group back in Nov/Dec 2014.

There has never been any proven rhyme or reason to the order in which people have their references called. The contractor has a group of people making the calls, and each has a stack of the submitted forms. The OP's ended up at or near the top of someone's stack.

Not only was one of my references contacted a second time (contacted last year, apparently some slightly different questions this time around), but I also received an email from SSA asking for additional employment references. Issue is that I am a partner in a small law firm so I am technically self-employed. I really don't want anyone from OPM or SSA contacting my law partners if I don't end up getting the ALJ gig. I responded with the names of a couple of other attorneys who used to be part of the same law firm. Wasn't sure what else to do. Surely I'm not the only person in private practice who doesn't want their current law partners being contacted. Thoughts?

I had a similar issue and did just what you did, i.e., named other lawyers that I worked with or that were trying cases with me with different client's etc...

I called and spoke with all of my references other than former employment to ask permission and let them know what is going on. It's the former employers (some, not all) that worry me. Not because I think I did a bad job or anything wrong, its just to what Privateatty speaks to....And, some folks just don't like to see others doing well.

I have been on every cert (tiny GAL). They just started re-calling my references today. Any guesses why they'd do this since they were already contacted the first time around?

Is re-calling references normal practice? If so- ugh. My references are going to be like I already told you everything I know! Also, it would be nice to let them know they will be hit again.

Yes, depending on how long it's been since they were called last time, it happens quite often. They may or may not call all the same people they called the time before.

Thanks! It hasn't been long since they were contacted so here's hoping they get a break!

This has been confusing/irritating for several of my references. Exactly! And some of my references are hard to get in touch with. I'd understand if they were calling people who they didn't talk to previously, but to re-call those with whom they've already spoken is very frustrating. I had 3 people that I know of called today.

It's the way they do things, so say some nice words to your references and thank them for their patience.
